Introduction

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 is the supported Windows 2000, XP, 2000 Server and 2003 Server Antivirus client for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. Once installed and configured, the VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 client will automatically scan any documents that are transferred from remote locations (email, disks, etc.) to your computer. Detailed scans of your hard drive(s) can be scheduled during your computer’s non-usage time. This document also contains instructions on installing and scanning your computer manually for viruses.

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 is designed specifically for Windows 2000, XP, 2000 Server and 2003 Server. Users of computers that have Windows 98 and ME should obtain and install McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1. For more information, please see the McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 document.

Installing McAfee VirusScan

Before continuing with the installation process, close all running programs and ensure that your computer has a connection to the Internet.

  1. To start installation of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 on your computer, insert the "McAfee VirusScan v. 7.1" installation cd-rom that was distributed to your office.  Once inserted, the installation program should automatically start. If it does not start, double-click the Setup.exe file on the cd-rom. The Netopsystems FEAD Optimizer will automatically recompose and run the VirusScan installer, as shown in Figure 1.1.

Updating Your Virus Definitions

By default, automatic virus definition updates are scheduled for 8:15 am daily in VirusScan Enterprise 7.1. To ensure that virus definitions are updated regularly, you should either leave the default update settings in place, or specify a schedule for the automatic update service to run.

A working connection to the Internet is required for the VirusScan update. If the Internet connection is not present at the time that VirusScan attempts to update, it will fail the update attempt and attempt to update again at the next scheduled time.

Users who do not have a persistent Internet connection should manually update the VirusScan program or a regular basis.

Updating Virus Definitions Manually

  1. Run the VirusScan Console program. Click on the Start button, then select Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console. The VirusScan Console window will appear. Open the task AutoUpdate, as shown in Figure 2.1, by double-clicking on the task.

Scanning Your Computer for Viruses

The VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 program, when installed, will run in the background of your computer. Any files you transfer from the Internet, a network, or removable media (Zip Disk, CD, etc) will automatically be scanned for any possible viruses. In order to actively scan any media device (Hard drive, Floppy disk, Zip Disk, etc) for viruses, you must perform a manual or automatic virus scan.

Scanning Your Computer Manually

  1. Run the VirusScan Console program. Click on the Start button, then select Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console. The VirusScan Console window will appear. Highlight the task Scan All Fixed Disks, as shown in Figure 3.1, by clicking on the task once.
  2. Figure 3.1

  3. In the VirusScan console, click on the Start button in the menu bar. McAfee will start scanning your computer. The VirusScan window will look similar to Figure 3.2.

If, during the scan, VirusScan encounters any viruses, it will inform you with a pop-up dialogue box. Choose the appropriate action to take – removing the virus is always recommended.

Once the scan is completed, if no viruses were found, you should see a message at the bottom of the window that says “No infected items were found.” Close the VirusScan window and VirusScan Console.

3. Click on the Schedule tab located at the top of the new window. Check the Enable box and then select how often you wish the scan to run. You can choose to update when you start up the computer, when you shut down or at a scheduled specified time. Choose a running occurrence type and then the specific occurrence details that appear.

It is recommended that you scan your computer for viruses every 7-14 days. You should also choose a time when you are away from your computer.

After setting the reoccurrence schedule, the Properties window should look similar to Figure 3.5.

Figure 3.5

4. Once you have your selections made, click OK and then close the Console. McAfee will start scanning your computer at the time and date and at the interval that you have set.

If a virus is detected, McAfee by default will prompt you for a response. It will not automatically provide the answers to the prompt if/when a virus is detected. In order to have McAfee VirusScan to automatically fix all infected files, you can change the settings by selecting the Scan My Computer task and clicking on the Configure button.
