McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 is the supported Windows 98 and ME Antivirus client for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. This document contains instructions on installation and setting up the Antivirus client, initiating a manual virus definition update, setting up automatic virus definition updates, and scanning your computer manually for viruses.

Once installed and configured, the VirusScan 4.5.1 client will automatically scan any documents that are transferred from remote locations (email, disks, etc.) to your computer. Detailed scans of your hard drive(s) can be scheduled during your computer's non-usage time.

VirusScan 4.5.1 is designed specifically for Windows 98 and ME. Users of computers who have Windows 2000, XP and 2000/2003 Server should install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1. For more information, please see the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 document

Installing McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1

Before continuing with the installation process, close all running programs.

1. Before installing VirusScan 4.5.1, you are strongly advised to uninstall any earlier version of McAfee VirusScan: click Start/Settings/Control Panel, double click on Add/Remove Programs, highlight McAfee VirusScan (4.0.3), and click the Add/Remove button. If you have other antivirus agents, you should uninstall these as well. During the uninstallation process you may be asked if you want to "delete the shared files and folders". If asked this question, answer "yes". After the software is uninstalled, restart your machine (Start/Shutdown/Restart).

2. Obtain the installation media for v. 4.5.1. This will be a cd-rom that has been previously sent to your office. Insert the cd-rom into your machine. If the program does not automatically start, browse to the cd-rom (using My Computer or Windows Explorer) and double-click on setup.exe. In some cases, your machine may need to be rebooted in order to update the Microsoft Installer. (You will receive a message requesting a reboot if your machine needs to be updated.) Following the reboot process, the Installer will continue the software installation.

3. The McAfee Product Information screen, shown in Figure 1.2, will appear. Click the Next button.

VirusScan will prompt you when a virus is located, and report at the end of the scan what has been accomplished.

Updating Virus Definitions

Virus definitions describe the structure of known viruses, allowing the McAfee VirusScan product to successfully search and find viruses on your computer. As new viruses appear, new definitions are created for the Antivirus product.

In order to fully protect your computer, virus definitions must be updated on a regular basis. Using a connection to the Internet, VirusScan 4.5.1 allows you to manually update your virus definitions or schedule automatic virus definition updating.

Updating the Virus Definitions Manually

1. Make sure you have connection to the Internet on your computer by Ethernet network, modem dial-in or broadband.

2. Run the VirusScan Console program. Click the Start button on your Start Bar, then Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

3. The console will list several tasks that can be performed, as shown in Figure 2.1 below. Select AutoUpdate by double-clicking it.

Updating the Virus Definitions Automatically

1. Make sure you have a dedicated connection to the Internet on your computer by Ethernet network, modem dial-in or broadband. VirusScan 4.5.1, when scheduled to do so, will use the Internet to download and install virus definitions. If an Internet connection is not available during the scheduled time, the update will fail.

2. Run the VirusScan Console program. Click the Start button on your Start Bar, then Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

3. The console will list several tasks that can be performed, as shown in Figure 2.4 below. Select the AutoUpdate task by double-clicking it.

Figure 2.4

4. The AutoUpdate profile window will appear, as shown in Figure 2.5. Click on the Schedule tab to set a reoccurring pattern for the AutoUpdate task.

Figure 2.5

5. In the AutoUpdate Schedule window, ensure Enable is selected. You can choose to update when you start up the computer, when you shut down or at a scheduled specified time. Choose a running occurrence type and then the specific occurrence details that appear.

Most virus definition updates are available on a weekly basis. Therefore, you should update your virus definitions at least once a week. You should also choose a time when you are away from your computer.

The AutoUpdate Schedule window will look similar to Figure 2.6 below. Once you have made your scheduling changes, click on OK.

Figure 2.6

6. The AutoUpdate is now scheduled and will run at your specified occurrences. Close the VirusScan Console.

Scanning Your Computer for Viruses

The VirusScan 4.5.1 program, when installed, will run in the background of your computer. Any files you transfer from the Internet, a network, or removable media (Zip Disk, CD, etc) will automatically be scanned for any possible viruses. In order to actively scan any media device (Hard drive, Floppy disk, Zip Disk, etc.) for viruses, you must perform a manual or automatic virus scan.

Scanning Your Computer Manually

1. Run the VirusScan Console program. Click the Start button on your Start Bar, then Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. The VirusScan Console window will appear. Highlight the task Scan My Computer, as shown in Figure 3.1 below, by clicking on the task once.

Figure 3.1

3. In the VirusScan console, click on the Start button in the menu bar. McAfee will start scanning your computer - including all of your removable media drives (floppy, Zip, CD-ROM, etc.), and hard disks. The VirusScan window will look similar to Figure 3.2 below.

Figure 3.2

4. If during the scan VirusScan encounters any viruses, it will inform you with a pop-up dialogue box. Choose the appropriate action to take - removing the virus is always recommended.

5. Once the scan is completed, if no viruses were found, you should see a message at the bottom of the window that says "No infected items were found," as shown in Figure 3.3. Your scan is complete; close the VirusScan window and VirusScan Console.

You can choose to update when you start up the computer, when you shut down or at a scheduled specified time. Choose a running occurrence type and then the specific occurrence details that appear.

It is recommended that you scan your computer for viruses every 7-14 days. You should also choose a time when you are away from your computer.

After setting the reoccurrence schedule, the Properties window should look similar to Figure 3.5.

Figure 3.5

4. Once you have your selections made, click OK and then close the Console. McAfee will start scanning your computer at the time and date and at the interval that you have set.

If a virus is detected, McAfee by default will prompt you for a response. It will not automatically provide the answers to the prompt if/when a virus is detected. In order to have McAfee VirusScan to automatically fix all infected files, you can change the settings by selecting the Scan My Computer task and clicking on the Configure button.

Features and Default Tasks of McAfee VirusScan Console

McAfee VirusScan, once installed correctly, will scan any file that is transferred to your computer from the Internet or network. VirusScan is not limited to just this background virus checking; users can perform manual virus scans, update virus definitions and schedule automatic virus checking and virus updates.

The following is a list of the common features and the tasks available in the McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 application.

VirusScan Console Features

As shown in Figure 4.1 below, there are ten different icons that perform various functions within the McAfee VirusScan Console.

Figure 4.1
New Task: Clicking on this button will allow you to create a new task, such as scanning a certain drive on your computer.
Properties: This button will list the properties of the currently highlighted task.
Configure: This button will show the current configuration settings for the highlighted task.
Copy/Paste/Delete: These buttons will allow you to copy, paste, and delete various tasks inside the Console.
Start/Stop: These buttons either start or stop the current task that is running.
Virus List: Clicking this button will bring up a list of the current viruses that McAfee scans for.
Help: This button brings up a help window with an index of all of McAfee's functions and terminology.

Default Tasks

The main VirusScan Console window lists five default tasks that may be run manually, are running automatically or can be scheduled to run automatically. Figure 4.2 lists them below.

Figure 4.2
VShield: The VShield is a program that automatically loads when Windows starts up and runs constantly in the background scanning files, folders, email messages and attachments as they come through the internet for viruses.
AutoUpgrade: This function is meant for updating your version of McAfee VirusScan; however with this version of McAfee, AutoUpgrade is not usable as UK has purchased the license for this version only.
AutoUpdate: AutoUpdate connects to the McAfee web site and downloads the most recent virus definitions so that your computer will be up-to-date with the latest cures for new viruses.
Scan My Computer: This option will allow you to scan your entire computer for viruses.
Scan Drive 'C': This option will allow you to scan your C: drive, or your main hard disk for viruses.

What version of McAfee VirusScan do I have?

To find the version of McAfee VirusScan that is currently installed on your computer:

    a. Look for the VShield icon in the lower left corner of your machine (in the System Tray).

    b. Move your mouse over this icon and RIGHT click. You will see a menu that has several options. Choose "About".

    c. The next screen will be the VirusScan "splash" screen with the software version, serial number, DAT file date, creation date, and scan engine version. If you are using version 4.0.3 (or less), you MUST upgrade to a newer version to take advantage of the advanced virus scanning tools. Updating DAT files, alone, will not find some of the newer viruses.

How do I know that I have the most recent version of McAfee VirusScan?

Follow the steps ("What version of McAfee VirusScan do I have?") outlined above. Your version of McAfee VirusScan should be "McAfee VirusScan w/ SP v4.5.1".
