NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Dates to Remember: I trust that some of you are diligently working on your application for the Distinguished Educator Award. Because we have many Educators who have outstanding programs, I have not been surprised that this award has been a very competitive one and that the selection process is difficult. Do not let the competitiveness of this award or your humbleness deter you from applying. While it is disappointing to apply and not win, the greater inequity for yourself and the Extension program is to not apply when you could have won. Applications are due in my office by 5:00 p.m. on Tues., Dec. 1. The award will be presented at the upcoming Extension Biannual Conference, January 20-21, 2010, and will be held at the OSU Student Union.  Since this will be our last newsletter before Thanksgiving break, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Announcements

Retired Extension Educator Celebrates Century Mark: J.D. Edmonson, retired County Agent, celebrated his 100th birthday November 12. He began his Extension career in 1934 in Kay County. He served in Osage, Woodward, and Grant counties  before retiring in 1965. Edmonson coached the winning 4-H livestock judging team from Woodward County at the 1950 National 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest in Chicago.  He was an Assistant County Agent attending State 4-H Roundup in either 1936 or 1937. Large tents were used for 4-H assemblies as there were no buildings on campus large enough to hold all of the delegates. During an assembly a strong gust of wind blew down the tent. No one was seriously injured. Legislation was passed to provide funding for the 4-H Club and Student Activities Building, which was dedicated in 1938. This building is now called the Gallagher-Iba Arena.

AWARDS

Publication Earns Honor: The “Oklahoma Homeowner’s Handbook for Soil and Nutrient Management” recently earned the 2009 Certificate of Excellence from the American Society of Agronomy. Written by Hailin Zhang and Bill Raun, this award-winning handbook brings cutting-edge research, honed over decades in cultivated field crops, to the lawns and gardens of Oklahoma, and does so in a format that is easy to understand and incorporate. The award was presented at the combined meeting of ASA, Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.

Banks Honored: J.C. Banks, Extension Cotton Specialist, was presented the Legends of Agriculture Award at the recent Farm City Week Banquet.
