America Recycles Day Contest for High School Students: Oklahoma High School students are invited to create a public service announcement to promote awareness about recycling. This contest is a part of the Oklahoma Recycling Association’s (OKRA) America Recycles Day campaign.  The purpose of America Recycles Day is to raise awareness of the importance of recycling across the state.  The deadline for entry is Oct. 23. “Beyond the Bin” is the theme for this year’s contest.   Contestants’ 30 or 60 second PSA message should emphasize what happens to recyclables after they are collected in the community.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place entries ($500, $300, and $150 respectively). Winning entries will be announced Nov. 15, which is America Recycles Day. For rules and entry forms please visit http://recycleok.org/psa-contest.phpFor more information contact Sara Ivey, Education Chair, at info@recycleok.org, or Ilda Hershey, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, at 405-744-9806. In Oklahoma, America Recycles Day is co-sponsored by OKRA, OG&E, the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and the Metropolitan Environmental Trust.

Oklahoma Makes Big Showing at 2009 NACAA Conference: Oklahoma was well represented at the 2009 National Association of County Agriculture Agents Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference. This 94th conference took place in Portland, Ore., Sept. 20-24. Thirty-nine attended this meeting, 28 members, one life member, and 10 spouses. This gave us 39 Oklahoma ambassadors brandishing “orange” and letting folks know what a great NACAA conference they will experience in Tulsa in 2010. The excitement of the Oklahoma delegation was infectious, culminating in the invitational video with Baxter Black, movie clips, “Oklahoma Rising,” and President Phil Pratt’s invitation to attend the conference next year.
Phil Pratt was installed as President of NACAA. Dirk Webb finished his two-year term as NACAA Southern Director. Brian Jervis completed his term as Horticulture Committee Southern Region Vice-Chair.
One of the NACAA’s highest honors is the Distinguished Service Award. This year William Burton and Randy Pirtle were so honored.
