FAPC to Hold Certified Barbecue Judging Class: The Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center, located on the Oklahoma State University campus, is hosting a class to teach participants how to judge barbecued meats. The event will take place April 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the FAPC. Ed Roith of the Kansas City Barbeque Society will teach the Certified Barbecue Judging Class. The cost for the event is $50 for KCBS members and $75 for nonmembers. The nonmember fee entitles the participant to a one-year membership in the KCBS. The event is co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Beef Council, Oklahoma Pork Council, and Oklahoma Poultry Federation.

Scott Price Honored: The Grant County USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service recently recognized Scott Price, Grant County Extension Educator, Agiculture/4-H Youth Development, and CED, at the group’s annual Conservation Fair. Price was presented with the Governor’s Conservation Award plaque signed by Gov. Brad Henry for unselfish devotion and dedication to the cause of conservation demonstrated by diligent work in conserving the soil and water resources of Oklahoma. Price has been an Extension Educator in Grant County since 1982.

Calling Tom Manske: Individuals needing to contact Tom Manske, Canadian County Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development/Kirkpatrick 4-H Farm Manager, should call him at 405-354-4110. This is the number for the Kirkpatrick 4-H Farm. The number listed in the 2008 Personnel Directory is the Canadian County Extension Office.

OALP Class XIII Set to Graduate: OALP Class XIII will hold its final seminar and graduation on April 5 at 11:30 a.m. in the Wes Watkins Center.  Lt. College Corner

Timmons Named Truman Scholar: Courtney Timmons, Ada, a Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering junior, recently was named a Truman Scholar. She is the 15th OSU student to receive the coveted honor and one of just 80 U.S. college juniors to receive the $30,000 scholarship this year. She is a 2004 graduate of Byng High School. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation supports students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education, or other public service.

PaSS Student Wins Scholarship: Heidi E. West, a Department of Plant and Soil Sciences graduate student, has been named a recipient of a $2,500 Annie’s Homegrown Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship. West earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from OSU in 2006. She currently is a master’s student studying under Chad Penn examining the potential use of short-rotation woody crops in combination with agronomic crops to remediate animal waste lagoons.

Crain Recognized: Jared Crain, a student in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, has been selected to receive a Wentz Research Project for the 2008-2009 academic year. The Lew Wentz Foundation and OSU provide support for the nationally recognized Wentz Research Project awards. This is a one-year research project award ($4,500) given to undergraduate student scholars to conduct independent research with the guidance of a faculty mentor. He will be working with Jeff Hattey and Daren Redfearn on a project to compare and contrast the quantity of soil carbon at sites with conventional tillage (or those converted to reduced tillage) to sites with native vegetation, in an effort to determine the potential for Oklahoma soils to store or release CO2 into the atmosphere.
