Retirement Reception Set for Terry Nelson: Everyone is invited to attend a retirement reception for Terry Nelson, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, and CED, Woodward County. The event will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Josie Adams Cultural Center, 818 Main, in Woodward. Terry has been with Extension since October 1977. Culver Academy to Host Open House: Oklahoma 4-H’ers who have a passion for horsemanship are invited to attend the Culver Academy Open House Nov. 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Oklahoma City. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about Culver Academy, a 9th through 12th grade college preparatory school in Culver, Ind. Culver Academy representatives will present information on Jud Little scholarships, which are available to rural Oklahoma horse-loving youth. Information about Culver schools and summer camps will also be presented. The event will take place at the home of a Culver alumnus, located at 11750 N. Bryant Avenue in Oklahoma City. Water Issues in Horticulture Workshop Slated: OSU’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, along with OCES and the Oklahoma Botanical Garden and Arboretum, is sponsoring a Water Issues in Horticulture workshop Dec. 4. The event will take place at the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration received by Nov. 24 is $75. Extension Educators, OBGA members and Master Gardeners receive a discounted rate of $50. After Nov. 24 all registration is $100. Students with a copy of their school ID may enroll for $30. No-Till Conference Slated February 2009: The No-till Oklahoma Conference will take place Feb. 9-10 in Oklahoma City. This conference is designed to bring the latest developments in no-till cropping systems to interested farmers and ranchers from Oklahoma and surrounding states. The innovative speakers will provide maximum interaction between agricultural professionals ranging from producers to industry experts. Registration is $95 per person if received by Jan. 10. Public Speaking Winners Present Speeches: The Oklahoma Water Resources Board sponsored a new public speaking category (Water Conservation and Protection) at State 4-H Round-up last summer, with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in the Speech, Illustrated Presentation and Power Point divisions.  1st place winners presented their speeches at the Governor’s Water Conference last week and impressed the crowd of 300+.  Those making presentations were:

  • Speech – Tanner Allread, Canadian County
  • Illustrated Presentation – Chrystal and Miranda Patton, Comanche County
  • Power Point – Jenna Murray, Comanche County

Derek Smithee, former Oklahoma County 4-H member and past State 4-H Hall of Fame Winner, was instrumental in providing this opportunity to showcase the considerable talent of our 4-H members.  There are plans to sponsor the contest again next year.

Condolences to: Carolyn Clifton, Community Nutrition Education Program Area Coordinator, Okmulgee Unit, on the death of her grandmother. Ruby Sexton passed away Oct. 29. Funeral services took place Oct. 31 at the First Baptist Church in Kiowa, Okla.

Condolences to: Brinda Johnson, Caddo County Extension Secretary, on the death of her father. Willie James “Dub” Johnson passed away on Nov. 1. Funeral services took place Nov. 6 at the First Baptist church in Fort Cobb. Cards may be sent to Brinda at the Caddo County Extension Office, 201 W. College Corner

CASNR Career Services Offering Spring Class: CASNR Career Services is offering one section of AG 1111 - Career Exploration in Agriculture and Natural Resources for Spring 2009. Students enrolled in this course will participate in activities that assist them with understanding the diverse career opportunities possible within the agriculture and natural resource industries and gain knowledge of job responsibilities and qualifications necessary for success in these career fields. Students will also explore their own interests, abilities, values and personality types as related to career preferences and decisions. This is an excellent elective course for students who are unsure of their career direction. AG 1111 will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. Students interested in these courses may enroll through Student SISWeb.

Congratulations to: Mike Schnelle, Extension floriculture specialist, was awarded the 2008 Outstanding Nurseryman of the Year by the Oklahoma Nursery and Landscape Association at the group’s annual conference in Oklahoma City.
