Statewide Cucurbit Meeting Slated: The 2007 Oklahoma Cucurbit Vegetable Production and Marketing Meeting will take place Dec. 13 at the Grady County Fairgrounds. This year's program will focus on developments with the Oklahoma Farm to School Program and the new opportunities for fruit and vegetable growers. The program is posted at www.lane-ag.org  in the "Events and Meetings" section. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to: Cindy Clampet, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development, Love County, on the birth of her first grandchild. Liliana Joye Anderson was born Oct. 15, weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 20 ¼ inches long.

Condolences to: Gloria King, Southwest District Family and Consumer Sciences Program Specialist, on the death of her mother-in-law. Mary King passed away Oct. 20. Funeral services took place Oct. 23 at the United Methodist Church in Elk City. Cards can be mailed to Gloria at Rt. 4, Box 6750, Elk City, 73644.  Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, 720 W. Country Club Blvd., Elk City, OK  73644.

Condolences to: Shelia Julian, Administrative Assistant, Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, OSU, on the death of her mother. Meja Baker passed away Oct. 31. Funeral services will take place Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Stillwater Bible Baptist Church located at East Virginia and North Jardot. Cards may be mailed to Sheila at 2315 S. Willis, Stillwater, OK  74074, or to 139 Ag Hall on the OSU campus.

AWARDS

Extension Educators Bring Home Awards: Seventeen members of Oklahoma Association of Extension 4-H Agents recently traveled to Atlanta, Ga., to attend the association’s national meeting.  Those attending were Charles Cox, Dorothy Wilson, Kevin Allen, Cathy Allen, Melanie Lynes-Matt, Rebecca Anderson, Carol Laverty, Sara West, Karla Knoepfli, Becky Walker, Alan VanDeventer, Jim Rutledge, Tom Manske, Kyle Worthington, David Sorrell, Nancy Dunlap, and Janna Kelly. Several Oklahoma members received regional and national awards.

Southern Regional Winners:

  • Mary Peck - Natural Resources Environmental Stewardship Award
  • Alan VanDeventer - 4-H/Army Youth Development Project Salute Award

National Winners:

  • Gloria King – Achievement in Service Award
  • Melanie Lynes - Matt - Achievement in Service Award
  • Kyle Worthington – Distinguished Service Award
  • Ross Sestak – Distinguished Service Award 
  • Susan Murray – Meritorious Service Award
  • Nancy Dunlap – 25 Years of Service Award
  • Recia Garcia – 25 Years of Service Award
  • Charlotte Richert – 25 Years of Service Award                      
  • Mary Peck – Natural Resources Environmental Stewardship Award 

In addition to the awards, Tomas Manske was elected to serve as the Southern Regional Director for the association.     

Collegiate 4-H Wins Awards: Congratulations to OSU Collegiate 4-H for winning the Homecoming Sweepstakes Award for Student Organizations. The group also won the Student Organizations Float Trophy. Club members participated in the parade with their float, had a lawn sign on the library lawn, a banner in the Student Union, a painted window in Ag Hall, and also a game and chili booth at the Harvest Carnival --hats-off to the members who represented 4-H and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources so well during OSU’s Homecoming.

CASNR is a Spirited College: The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resource received a plaque for being named the Most Spirited College during OSU’s Homecoming celebration. CASNR organizations also took first place at the 2007 OSU Homecoming Harvest Carnival. Congratulations!

Crops Judging Team Places at Regional Competition: The Oklahoma State University Crops Judging Team took second place at the Regional Contests in Manhattan, Kan. Oct. 20. Team members include Josh Bushong, Jeff Gaither, and Michael Reinert. In addition to the team taking second place, Bushong, a plant and soil sciences senior, placed fourth in the individual contest. The team is coached by Kerry O’Neill and Tia Nobles.  The team now moves into high gear to start practicing at least three days a week in preparation for the national contest this month. Congratulations!

DASNR Employees Honored: Several DASNR employees were honored during the Staff Advisory Council’s Staff Awards Day program. Award winners include:

·        Kim Brock, Animal Science - Distinguished Service Award

·        Melissa Dunn, Natural Resources and Ecology Management – Distinguished Service Award

·        Debra Wells, Agricultural Economics – Distinguished Service Award

·        Elaine Strebler, Natural Resources and Ecology Management. Distinguished Service Award finalist

·        Anna Whitney, Agricultural Economics - Distinguished Service Award finalist

·        Matthew Rumsey, Natural Resources and Ecology Management – Distinguished Service Award finalist
