ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hermann Partners on Upcoming Project: Janice Hermann, Extension Nutrition Education Specialist, along with Whitney Brosi and Jan Johnston, both Assistant Professors, Human Development and Family Science, and Linda Jaco, Oklahoma ABLE Tech, have received funding from USDA, CSREES, for a project titled “Empowering Older, Rural Oklahomans and their Communities: Assessment and Education on Contextual Barriers to Positive Nutrition and Health.” The goal of the project is to empower older persons and their communities to make good decisions about nutritional behaviors and health. The efforts of this project include both research and education. First, the team will investigate rural contextual barriers and resources related to nutrition and health by conducting statewide research in all of Oklahoma’s 68 rural counties. Second, the team will develop a Cooperative Extension Curriculum which will be disseminated to Extension Educators across the state. A unique element of this curriculum will include information regarding assistive technology devices for shopping, cooking, and eating, which can become difficult for older persons as a result of normative and non-normative aging. The group will begin work in mid-October on this one year project which has a total budget of $356,110.
