NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR  

 CURRENT EVENTS

‘Green Acres’ is the Place to Be: Green Acres teaches new and prospective landowners about land purchases, management and different potential enterprises. The educational short course runs for three consecutive Tuesday evenings, February 1, February 8, and February 15, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will take place at the Tulsa County Extension Office, 4116 E. 15th St. Registration is $25.00 per person or $30.00 per couple and includes two reference books and refreshments. Pre-registration is encouraged as the course fills up quickly. Those interested in attending may receive addition information and download a pdf file of the Green Acres brochure on the Tulsa County Web site at http://www.oces.tulsacounty.org.

SWANA Spring Symposium: The Cherokee Casino in Catoosa is the site for the annual Solid Waste Association of North America Spring Symposium. The event will take place February 28-March 1. The two-day symposium can assist decision makers with improving and maintaining efficient waste management operation. The target audience includes solid waste managers and facility operators, city managers, local decision makers, elected officials, county commissioners, public works directors, engineering firms, equipment dealers, consultants, contractors, health department officials, and economic developers. Registration is $100 per person and includes all materials, sessions, exhibits, two lunches, break refreshments, bus, and tour. Congratulations to: Samantha Wagner, Extension Educator, Horticulture, Cleveland County, on her marriage to John Snyder. Samantha and John exchanged vows on December 2.

Congratulations to: Jen Anthony, Executive Administrative Assistant, Office of the Vice President, Dean and Director, DASNR, and her husband, Luke, on the birth of their daughter. Lucille Caroline was born December 18, weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 21 inches long.

Congratulations to: Mandy Gross, Communications Specialist, Food and Agricultural Products Center, and her husband, J.W., on the birth of their daughter. Oakley Tabor was born December 30, weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

Condolences to: The family of Kevin Hayes, retired Regents Service Professor, Agricultural Communications Services. He passed away December 17. A funeral mass took place December 22 at the Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Potomac Falls, VA. The family has indicated memorials may be directed to either the Knights of Columbus of choice, or a charity of choice.

Condolences to: The family of Charlie Shultz, former Grady County Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development. He passed away December 17. Funeral services took place December 19 at Becker Funeral Home in Lawton. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Condolences to: Bob Terry, former Department Head, Agricultural Education, and retired Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program Director, on the death of his wife. Barbara Terry passed away January 8. Funeral services took place January 11 at the University Heights Baptist Church in Stillwater. Graveside services took place later that day at the New Hope Cemetery in Meeker. Memorials may be made in her name to the Terry Trust of the Agricultural Education Scholarship Program, c/o the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech Education, 1500 W 7th Ave., Stillwater, OK  74074; University Heights Baptist Church Foundation, 323 S. Knoblock, Stillwater, OK  74074; or the Stillwater Medical Auxiliary, 1323 W. 6th Ave., Stillwater, OK  74074.

AWARDS

Washington County 4-H’ers Bring Home Awards: The Washington County 4-H Livestock Judging Team, consisting of Kayla Swanson, Caney Valley; Cassie Pirtle, Copan; Jared Seeley, Bartlesville; and Jessica King, Dewey, represented Oklahoma at the recent National Western Roundup in Denver, CO.  The team placed 4th in swine, 5th in beef cattle, and 7th overall.  Thirty-seven states and provinces from the U.S. and Canada sent teams to the livestock judging competition at Denver this year.  The team is coached by Randy Pirtle, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, and CED, in Washington County. Congratulations on a fine job of representing Oklahoma 4-H and the state. 

McCowan to be Honored: The City of Stillwater will recognize LaDonna McCowan, Assistant Extension Specialist, during its Martin Luther King Jr., ceremonies on January 15. McCowan is being recognized as a community leader who best represents King, his beliefs, and his actions.
