NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR   

 CURRENT EVENTS

Pecan Workshop: Individuals interested in pecans should make plans to attend the Pecan Grafting and Maintenance Workshop slated April 27 in the Frye Auditorium at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Norman. The workshop is from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is free of charge. For more information contact Samantha Wagner, Horticulture Extension Educator, Cleveland County, at 405-321-4774.

Plant Sale: The 31st 2006 Annual OSU Horticulture Club and OBGA Plant Sale will take place April 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the OSU Teaching Greenhouses. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Avian Influence Conference Very Informative: Approximately 150 Extension Educators, animal health officials, veterinarians, and poultry industry representatives were on hand for the “Poultry Disease Conference: Preparing for Avian Influenza” conference that took place March 30. Some of the nation’s leading animal health experts took part and discussed their roles in the event of an avian influenza outbreak. Also on the agenda were current avian influenza updates, diagnosis, proper on-farm bio-security measures, mass euthanasia, carcass disposal, and emergency preparation/response to an avian disease outbreak.

Albertson’s Provides Awards: Kari Nunneley, 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator, Oklahoma County, was awarded $250 by Albertson’s to make nutrition education kits. LaDonna Dunlop, RD, LD, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Educator, also was awarded $500 from Albertson’s. She will use the funds for summer “Kids in the Kitchen” cooking schools.

Festival of Food Was Big Success: The 10th Annual Festival of Food took place March 30 in Lawton.  Two free concurrent sessions were available each hour with a special presentation at noon by Dillard’s Department Store on the latest in kitchen appliances and cookware. Sessions included “Cooking with El Greco” featuring healthy Greek food; “Crepes: America’s Fast Food” by Frances Jackson, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development Extension Educator, Jefferson County; “Cabbage for a New Generation” by Barbara Brown, Extension Food Specialist; “Living With Diabetes” by Janice Hermann, Extension Nutrition Specialist; “8 Weeks to Optimal Health” by Rebecca Pazoureck, Cameron University; and “Chocolate: Everyone’s Friend” by Donna Jung, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development Extension Educator, Canadian County. The 2006 event drew 124 participants from counties in the Southwest District, in addition to participants from Texas and Florida.

Hartley Receives Grant: Diana Hartley, Community Development Extension Educator, Cleveland County, was awarded a $500 mini-grant from the Leadership Development and Citizen Engagement Committee of Oklahoma Home and Community Education. She will use the grant to attend a Community Development Academy in Missouri this fall.

Dunlop to Serve as Coordinator: LaDonna Dunlop, MS, RD, LD, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Educator, Oklahoma has been elected to serve as the National Legislative Network Coordinator for the Oklahoma Dietetic Association. The Oklahoma Dietetic Association consists of more than 800 dietitians in the state of Oklahoma.

Congratulations to: Chad Otto, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, Kay County, and his wife, Bonnie, on the birth of their son. Tanner Matthew Otto was born April 4, weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Condolences to: Phyllis Heisler, Secretary, Pawnee County, on the death of her brother, Jimmy Sallee. He passed away March 26. Funeral services took place March 30 at the Church of Christ in Cushing. Graveside services followed at the Highland Cemetery in Pawnee. Cards may be mailed to Nadine Sallee, 515 Cleveland St., Pawnee, OK  74058. Memorial donations may be made to World Video Bible School, 130 Lantana Lane, Maxwell, TX   78656-4231.

Condolences to: The family of N.B. Thomas, retired State Cotton Specialist. He passed away March 30. Funeral services took place April 4 at the First Christian Church in Altus. Interment was held at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell. Memorials may be made in memory of N.B. Thomas to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund, 1300 N. Hudson, Altus, OK  73521.
