NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR   

 CURRENT EVENTS

Annual Cucurbit Meeting: The 2005 Oklahoma cucurbit Production and Marketing Educational Meeting will take place December 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha. The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in the production, marketing, and use of cucurbit vegetables. The meeting includes a complimentary noon meal. While there is no registration fee, participants are encouraged to register in order to assist with meal planning. For more information, contact Jim Shrefler, Area Extension Horticulture Specialist, via email at jshrefler-okstate@lane-ag.org. Meeting information also is posted at www.lane-ag.org.

 Ag Conference Slated: The Grady County Ag Conference will take place January 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha. Topics to be covered include burning for cedar control, state legislation outlook, cattle market outlook, alternative fuels for Oklahoma, and a no-till discussion panel. For more information about the conference, contact Michael Pettijohn, Grady County Extension Educator, Agriculture, at 405-224-2216.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Spring Fee Waivers Due December 22: Fee waivers for the 2006 spring semester must be submitted no later than December 22, five working days prior to the first day of class slated January 9, 2006. Waivers should be submitted to 245 Ag Hall.  The Study and Education Form should accompany the fee waiver and be signed by your County Extension Director, District Extension Director, Department Head, and/or appropriate Unit Administrator, and then forwarded to 245 Ag Hall for processing. Please allow plenty of time to get these forms in by the deadline.  If you miss the deadline, the fee waiver WILL NOT be honored, no exceptions. No letters of explanation will be accepted. Fee Waiver Forms are kept in Ag Mailing Services and can be requested by calling 405-744-5823. NOTE: The Educational Leave Requests are now available on-line at the Staff Development intranet site at http://intranet.okstate.edu/staff_development/.

            Also, as a reminder, Distance Education Courses do have additional fees and in-service training does not require a fee waiver form. If you have questions, please contact your immediate supervisor as they have updated information regarding the policy on Fee Waiver and Study and Education Request Forms.

            If your class is cancelled, you decide to drop your class, or if you change your study and education form, call 405-744-6550 so that your records can be updated. Also, check your Bursar invoice to make sure you received the fee waiver. You should contact the Fee Adjustment Office at 405-744-6866 if you have questions.

 COLLEGE CORNER

Forestry Club Selling Wreaths: The OSU Forestry Club is selling wreaths again this year.  They are 12-inch mixed evergreen, made with a Noble fir base and juniper, incense, and Ponderosa pine clusters.  The cost is $20 each and checks should be made payable to the OSU Forestry Club. Contact Melissa Dunn at 405-744-5438 to place an order, or stop by 011 Ag Hall. The deadline for orders is December 13. Wreaths will be delivered by December 15; deliveries will be on-campus only.  If you would prefer an earlier delivery, that can be arranged.

 It’s Graduation Time: Seniors in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will hold Commencement on December 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. A reception will take place prior to the graduation ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the Noble Research Center.

Mitchell Inducted into Hall of Fame: Earl Mitchell, Jr., Professor/Interim Head, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, recently was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame during ceremonies held at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

 CASNR Students Earn Niblack Scholarships: OSU has announced the Niblack Scholars for the 2005-2006 academic year. CASNR students receiving the scholarship include Alicia Davis, freshman, Animal Science; Jessica M. Evans, sophomore, Animal Science; Ryan W. Geisert, freshman, Animal Science; Erin Latham, sophomore, Animal Science; Clayton M. Smith, freshman, Animal Science; Shana Watkins, junior, Animal Science. Congratulations to all recipients!
