NW District Extension Director Position: The NW District Extension Director position has been advertised and we are now in the process of accepting applications.  Review of those applications will begin August 1.  Those serving on the search and screening committee are:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Condolences to: Barbara Hatfield, retired Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Custer County, on the death of her mother, Willy Wrede. She passed away July 7. Funeral Services were held July 10 at the First United Methodist Church in Geary. 

 COLLEGE CORNER

Reception Slated to Welcome Students: CASNR is hosting a "College Welcome Reception" (in conjunction with ALPHA) for all new freshman and transfer students in CASNR during the afternoon of August 19.  CASNR faculty who are present will be introduced and will have the opportunity to interact with students. This event provides a way to welcome students to the College, and strong faculty participation helps to send the message that students are valued.

AWARDS

CASNR Faculty Bring Home Teaching-Related Awards: Several CASNR faculty members were honored with awards during the recent North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture meeting. Those receiving awards include:

             Jeff Hattey, Professor, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, received the NACTA Southern Region Outstanding Teaching Award for excellence in teaching and teaching-related activities.

            Janet Cole, Professor, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture; Steve Damron, Professor, Department of Animal Science; and Tom Kuzmic, Professor, Department of Forestry, all received the NACTA Teacher Fellow Award.

            Justin Moss, graduate student, Department of Plant & Soil Sciences, and Danna Kelemen, graduate student, Department of Agricultural Education, Communications and 4-H Youth Development, both received the NACTA Graduate Student Teaching Award.

 Team Cowboy Motorsports Wins…Again: Team Cowboy Motorsports, composed of students in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, recently defeated 23 teams from the United States and Canada to win the annual ASAE Quarter-Scale Tractor Competition. This was the second year in a row for the BAE students to win the highly competitive national championship.  However, this year was a bit different than 2004 because this year the students placed first in only one of the judging categories (Safety).  What carried Cowboy Motorsports to victory was overall consistency, with relatively high finishes in virtually every category (written design report, oral presentation, tractor pull, maneuverability, serviceability, etc.). The 1/4 Scale Tractor Competition is a year-long extracurricular activity and labor of love. The students organize, manage, and execute the work themselves. They not only performed exceptionally well in terms of design, fabrication, and tractor performance, but they also conducted themselves very well at the competition in East Moline, Ill.  Congratulations are in order for Ryan Haar (Director), Curtis Johnson (Co-Director), Kristin Stephens (Secretary-Treasurer), and all their Cowboy Motorsports teammates.  John Solie (faculty advisor) and Wayne Kiner (BAE Laboratory Manager) also are to be recognized for their efforts in support of the tractor team.

 FAPC Plays a Role in Space Muffins: The OSU Food Science Club won first place in the 2005 NASA Food Technology Commercial Space Center Product Development Center. The team, advised by Food Science Assistant Professor Margaret Hinds, developed the winning entry, Nutraffin, with the help of the Food and Agricultural Products Center. Nutraffin is a bit-sized carrot muffin snack made from fresh carrots, peanut flour, wheat flour, sugar, low-sodium baking power, cinnamon, cardamom, and soymilk. The objective of the competition was for students to make a nutritional, beneficial food with only crops that grow in space. The team will present their product and research to NASA scientists and officials at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Tex., in August.

NW District Extension Director Vacancy Announcement

Salary

Commensurate with education and experience.

 Description and Responsibilities

  • The district extension director is responsible for providing administrative leadership for 17 counties which comprise the Northwest District.  These duties include personnel and fiscal management, budget development, civil rights and affirmative action, and public relations/marketing.

 The district extension director will:

·                    Provide progressive leadership for the members of the district team, area specialists, and county educators.

·                    Work closely with state administrators regarding personnel and fiscal matters.

·                    Assure nondiscrimination and equal opportunity in employment and program delivery.

·                    Work closely with the assistant directors and the Agriculture Human Resources office staff to provide career, professional, and personal development opportunities for employees.

·                    Serve as facilitator with extension educators and county budget decision-makers to secure funding for extension programs.

·                    Support close working relationships with advisory committees, county commissioners, commodity groups, and other users of Extension programs.

·                    Other duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications

·                    A master’s degree with at least one degree in Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, or in an area related to Extension education.

·                    Seven or more years of successful progressively responsible professional work experience with a minimum of five years of Cooperative Extension work.

·                    Prior successful work experiences utilizing personnel and fiscal management, and supervision is required. Leadership roles and interaction with governmental and public agency officials is desirable.

·                    Excellent oral and written communication skills; good organizational development and management skills; knowledge and effective use of electronic communications and computer technology skills for communication and program management.

·                    Visionary team leadership skills are essential.

·                    Willingness to work within a flexible time frame which may include evenings and weekends and be willing to travel throughout the district, state, and occasionally out of state.

·                    The person selected for this position is expected to establish and maintain residence in the northwest district.

 Employment Conditions

This is a full-time (12-month) appointment. Salary commensurate with education and experience. The incumbent is administratively accountable to the Vice President, Dean and Director, Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, through the Associate Director of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
