CURRENT EVENTS

Strategic Planning for OSU Continues:  We are in the process of completing the DASNR portion of the strategic plan. A significant part of the strategy is to serve the needs of the citizens of Oklahoma. Much of the implementation for non-student audiences will be handled by OCES. We will be indicating that implementation will be through your ongoing stakeholder input processes (PAC’s, interactions with other organizations, etc.), your regular planning (annual goals, etc.), and the development and implementation of the OCES plan of work processes.

Bull Sale Slated: Oklahoma Beef, Inc. is hosting a bull sale March 25. The sale will begin at noon. For more information, please contact John Evans at jle@okstate.edu or visit the OBI web page at http://www.ansci.okstate.edu/exten/OBI/.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

FAPC Makes Paul Harvey Broadcast: America's dean of radio broadcasting has been talking up an OSU center that conducts taste testing for pet and animal foods in a natural and humane environment. In recent broadcasts, Paul Harvey talked about OSU's Citizen Scientist Program, begun by OSU Psychology Professor Charles Abramson. The center works in partnership with the Food and Agricultural Products Research and Technology Center and its Center for Pet and Animal Food Palatability Studies. Food Processing Engineer Tim Bowser says that instead of testing food products in a cold laboratory setting, the products get their taste trials at home where animals are more comfortable. Abramson's students train pet owners to scientifically observe and record data, which is then analyzed by the center. The tests are conducted only after pet food companies have determined their products are safe for animals to eat. Abramson says the research is more valid and less costly than lab-based trials. The center also helps OSU students and others learn about and appreciate the value of university research. Go to http://www.fapc.okstate.edu/FactSheets/petfood.pdf for more information on the program.
