Current Events

Field Day Slated: The Department of Animal Science will host the 3rd Annual Beef Research Field Day on November 3rd from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The field day will begin at the OSU Cross Timbers Research Range and conclude at the OSU Willard Sparks Beef Research Center. Many interesting and informative topics will be covered. The field day is free and open to the public. 4-H is Part of Field Day: Sundowner Trailer Manufacturer is hosting its 2nd Annual Field Day on October 13. The day’s events will begin at 8 a.m. with 4-H and FFA cattle judging. All participants must have an Extension Educator or FFA advisor present. The first place team will receive $1,000; the second place team will receive $750; and the third place team will receive $500. The purpose of the day is to provide exciting educational livestock programs along with a competitive judging contest. The Field Day will take place at the Sundowners Sports Arena, three miles south of Coleman, Okla., on Highway 48. For more information, contact Mick Umstead at 580-937-4255, ext. 2135.

Out of School Programming: If you are looking for resources to support an existing out-of-school program or to get one started, you might consider the following web sites:

http://www.afterschool.gov. This site includes a database of federal funding sources for both after-school and youth development programming.

http://www.wellesley.edu/WCW/CRW/SAC. This site is a link to research from the National Institute on out of school time, training, technical assistance, publications, and upcoming conferences and events.

http://www.afterschoolalliance.org. This site provides information on the October 11, 2001 program, Lights on Afterschool!

Serving on Southern PLC: Several OCES faculty are serving in leadership roles for the next three years on the Southern Region Program Leadership Committee (PLC) An 1890 and 1862 representative are elected by each Extension program area. Those serving in leadership roles on the PLC from Oklahoma include Ross Love, representing agriculture and natural resources; Kevin Hayes, communications and information technology; Claude Bess, middle management; and Charles Cox, 4-H youth development, who is also serving as vice chair of the Southern Region PLC.

Community Service Grants Available: Community service project grants of $500 to $1,500 are available to youth who take leadership roles and partner with other youth and adults in their communities. Youth teams must identify critical issues in their communities, develop activities to address these issues, and educate other young people and adults about ways to engage in community service. The deadline to apply is November 2. For more information, go to the National 4-H Council Youth Grants Program web site at http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/ycc/grantinfo.htm.

A New Face: A warm welcome goes out to LaDonna Dunlop who was recently hired as the new Area ONE Coordinator in the Northwest District. She is housed at the Logan County Extension Center. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition/food management from the University of Central Oklahoma.

On The Move: Some of the Family and Consumer Sciences State Specialists have been moved to new locations in the Human Environmental Sciences building at OSU. Jan Park is now located in 239 HES. Her new phone number is 744-6231. Janda Ritter is the new senior secretary and works for Jan and Debbie Richardson. Sue Williams has moved to 338 HES, but her phone number remains the same, 744-6825. Sissy Osteen is located in 337 HES, and she can be reached at 744-6282. Joyce Jones is housed in 339 HES, and her telephone number is 744-6282. Lynda Dillwith, senior secretary, has moved to 233 HES, and she can be reached at 744-6282. The mailing address for all OCES-FCS specialists/staff is still 104 HES.

Employee Services: As of September 24, Employee Services (Benefits) staff moved from the fourth floor to the first floor of Whitehurst. They are now located in 106 Whitehurst on the southeast side of the hallway. Pick-up boxes will no longer be located in 407 Whitehurst. If you have something to pick up, please go to the new location. If no one is there, please go to 106A Whitehurst.
