FAPC to Feature OSU Research During Symposium Feb. 16: OSU’s Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center, together with the Institute of Food Technology-Oklahoma section, are sponsoring the 10th Annual FAPC/IFT-OK Research Symposium to highlight food and agricultural products research conducted by FAPC and other OSU researchers. The symposium will take place Feb. 16 in room 201 of the FAPC from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., and will feature oral and poster presentations, keynote speaker, demonstration, lunch with the keynote, and a student lunch forum with graduates who are currently working in industry.
     The keynote speaker, Dr. Anthony Mata, will give a presentation on “Research Meats Reality: Challenges of New Product Development.” Participants also will have the opportunity to see a demonstration of the Cozzini SuspenTec® system, which will build on Mata’s presentation.
     The symposium is open to anyone who wants to attend. There is no charge for the day’s events; however, registration is required in order to receive a complimentary lunch ticket and business-style carry bag.      This year’s research symposium is being held in conjunction with OSU Research Week, which runs Feb. 15-19. Sponsors of the FAPC/IFT-OK Research Symposium include Cozzini Group and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

Crop Production Clinic: The 11th Annual Crop Production Clinic will take place March 11 at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Goodwell. There are seven Certified Crop Adviser CEU’s available. There is no fee to attend the clinic, however, participants are asked to pre-register by March 8 in order to get a count for the luncheon. 4-H Documentary to Air Feb. 27: The SUNUP documentary about Oklahoma 4-H will air once again Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. on OETA. Check your local listings or visit http://www.oeta.tv. The one hour documentary will air in its entirety, so if you missed it or want to see it again, be sure to tune in. For more information about SUNUP, visit http://sunup.okstate.edu.

Sheik Selected as Chair: Brenda Sheik, CNEP Evaluator, was elected chair of the Governing Board of the Okeene Municipal Hospital by fellow board members.  She has served on the hospital board for five years. 

Educators Raise Funds for Charities: Tom Manske, Canadian County 4-H Educator, and Kyle Worthington, Oklahoma County 4-H Educator, assisted in raising more than $15,000 for charities in Oklahoma and Canadian counties. More than $5,000 was raised at the December auction held in Mustang to benefit local families during the Christmas Toys for Tots Campaign. Another $10,500 was raised in cooperation with the Oklahoma City Police and Fire Departments and Oklahoma City businesses at the Southern Oklahoma City benefit auction that took place earlier this month for the Special Olympics. Tom donates his talents auctioneering and entertaining the crowd with the assistance of Kyle who works the crowd as a ring man taking bids at the events. They both donate their time for several nonprofit charitable groups each year throughout the Oklahoma Metro Community and surrounding counties expanding the visibility of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, while benefiting other nonprofit organizations and creating new partnerships with the Oklahoma 4-H Program.

Condolences to: Sharon Hardcastle, Extension Secretary, McClain County, on the death of her father. Robert Gillette passed away Jan. 14. Funeral services took place Jan. 16 at Wadley’s Funeral Home, Purcell. A second service took place Jan. 19 in Wyoming.

Extension Professionals Honored During OCES Conference: A number of Extension professionals were honored for their hard work and dedication during the OCES Biennial Conference last week. Those receiving awards include:

  • Recia Garcia – Distinguished Educator Award
  • Kevin Hackett – Distinguished Educator Award
  • J.J. Jones, Dave Sparks, Justin McDaniel, Chris Rice, Jack Wallace, Brian Freking, Travis Hanks, Gene Parker, and Marty Montague - Outstanding Faculty and Staff Honor  Award (Group)
  • Josh Payne and Brian Pugh - Outstanding Faculty and Staff Honor Award (Team)

Also at the conference the Omicron Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi recognized some of its members for their achievements. Award winners include:

  • Janna Kelley - Distinguished Service Award

  • Tracy Lane – Mid-Career Award
