CURRENT EVENTS

Retirement Reception for Brett Morris: Mark your calendar for Feb. 19 and come celebrate the 29-year career of Brett Morris, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Payne County. A retirement reception will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Payne County Administration Building, Room 202, 315 W. 6th St. in Stillwater. Brett began his Extension career in 1984.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Applications Available Soon for Camp TURF: Camp TURF (Tomorrow’s Undergraduates Realizing the Future) 2013 will take place June 9-21 on the OSU campus. The two-week camp allows students to explore career areas in horticulture and landscape architecture while participating in hands-on activities led by professors and professionals in the field. All costs to attend the camp are covered by the State Regents. Camp TURF is open to 25 Oklahoma students entering their freshman or sophomore year of high school in the fall of 2013. For more information, email shelley.mitchell@okstate.edu. Applications will be available soon on the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture’s website at www.hortla.okstate.edu, and applications will be accepted starting March 15.

Congratulations to: Zack Meyer, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, Okfuskee County, and his wife, Kayla, on the birth of their son. Kruz Alan was born Jan. 28, weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 19 ½ inches long.

Condolences to: The family of Mark Boyles, Assistant Extension Specialist. Mark passed away Jan. 23. Funeral services took place Jan. 28. Memorials may be made in Mark’s name to the Ripley United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 354, Ripley, OK 74062, or the American Diabetes Association, 3000 United Founders Boulevard, #108, Oklahoma City, OK 73112.

Condolences to: The family of Allen Hugh Burns, retired Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Carter County. Allen passed away Jan. 25. Funeral services took place Jan. 30 in Marietta.

Condolences to: Sue Hamilton, CNEP Area Coordinator, on the death of her mother. Kathryn Floyd passed away Feb. 3. Funeral services took place Feb. 6 at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel in Ada. Memorials may be made to the Latta partners in Excellence Foundation, P.O. Box 1572, Ada, OK  74821. Cards may be sent to Sue and her husband Gary at 16965 CR 3534, Ada, OK  74820.

COLLEGE CORNER

Horticulture Judging Team Competes: Congratulations to the OSU Horticulture Judging Team and coaches for placing 3rd in the judging contest at the 73rd Annual Meeting of the Southern Region, American Society for Horticultural Science that took place recently at Orlando, Fla. Team members include Kelley Conaghan, Jaden Rich, Yuki Roberts and Kristen Willis. In addition to placing 3rd overall, the team also placed 2nd in the Greenhouse Foliage and Floral Crops category. Team members also brought home some individual awards, including Roberts, 3rd place, Greenhouse Foliage and Floral Crops, and 3rd place, Woody Ornamentals. Courtney DeKalb placed 3rd in the J.B. Edmond Undergraduate Student Paper Competition, and was elected the 2013-2014 president of SR-ASHA Association of Collegiate Branches. Congratulations!
