CURRENT EVENTS

OK-FIRE Fall Workshops Continue: A number of OK-FIRE training workshops will take place this fall around the state. Both abbreviated evening sessions (7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) and full-day sessions (9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) will be available. Registration is required, but is free.  Registration is still open for the following locations:  Bartlesville, Afton, Poteau, Idabel, Ardmore, Antlers, and Stillwater.  All workshops will be directed by OSU fire meteorologist J. D. Carlson, OK-FIRE Program Manager. The link to the full announcement, which includes information on the workshops and how to register, can be found here.

Condolences to: Amy Corser, Muskogee County Extension Secretary, on the death of her mother. Sharon Corser passed away Oct. 21. Funeral services took place Oct. 25 at Foster Petering Funeral Home in Muskogee. Cards may be sent to Amy at 5821 E. 83rd St. South, Muskogee, OK  74403.

Condolences to: Craig McKinley, Extension Forester, on the death of his father. Vernon McKinley passed away Oct. 21. Funeral services took place Oct. 25 at the First United Methodist Church in Pauls Valley. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Pauls Valley, 401 N. Willow, Pauls Valley, OK  73075. Cards may be sent to Craig and Jean McKinley, 4905 Loper Ave., Stillwater, OK  74074.

Condolences to: Linda Goodwin, Jefferson County Extension Senior Secretary, on the death of her husband. Ron Goodwin passed away Oct. 29. A celebration of his life will take place at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds tomorrow, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. Cards may be sent to Linda at the Jefferson County Extension Office, 220 N. Main, Waurika, 73573.

OAE4-HA Members Recognized at National Meeting: Members of the Oklahoma Association of Extension 4-H Agents recently attended the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents Professional Development Conference in Orlando, Fla. Members attending were Cathy Allen, State 4-H Office; Kevin Allen, State 4-H Office; Lorena Arcila, Tinker Air Force Base; Daniela Chavez, OKC Latino Community Agency; Samantha Ephgrave, Noble County; Jessie Furnish, Cleveland County; Janna Kelley, Pontotoc County; Karla Knoepfli, State 4-H Office; Tomas Manske, Canadian County; Cheryl Newberry, Southeast District 4-H Program Specialist; Jim Rutledge, Lifetime Member and Oklahoma 4-H Foundation Director; David Sorrell, Marshall County; Becky Walker, Pontotoc County; and Kyle Worthington, Oklahoma County. Those receiving awards include:

Samantha Ephgrave – Southern Region winner for Excellence in Geospatial Programs, Southern Region winner for Natural Resources & Environmental Awareness Individual, and National Winner for Excellence In Geospatial Programs

Donna Patterson – Distinguished Service Award

Serving on the NAE4-HA national board is Kyle Worthington, Oklahoma Co. – Sr. Director, Southern Region, and Tomas Manske, Canadian County – Vice President for Professional Development. 

Cherokee County Team Places 2nd: The Cherokee County 4-H Meat Judging Team recently placed 2nd at the National 4-H Meat Judging and Identification Contest that took place at Kansas State University. The team is comprised of K.C. Barnes, Hallie Barnes, and Trico Blue. In addition to placing 2nd overall, the team also placed first in beef judging, retail judging, reasons, and total judging; 3rd in meat identification; and 5th in pork judging. The trio did well with individual scores as well with K.C. placing 1st overall, Hallie taking 5th, and Trico placing 6th.

Washita 4-H’ers Win Award: The Washita County 4-H Program was awarded the Environmental Excellence Award for Youth Groups for their GIS project that involved mapping illegal roadside dumps. The award was presented during the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Banquet.
