OK-FIRE Offering Fall Workshops: A number of OK-FIRE training workshops will take place this fall around the state. Both abbreviated evening sessions (7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) and full-day sessions (9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) will be available. Registration is required, but is free.  Registration is still open for the following locations:  Woodward, Weatherford, Bartlesville, Afton, Poteau, Idabel, Ardmore, Antlers, and Stillwater.  All workshops will be directed by OSU fire meteorologist J. D. Carlson, OK-FIRE Program Manager. The link to the full announcement, which includes information on the workshops and how to register, can be found here.

OK-FIRE is an operational weather-based decision support system (http://okfire.mesonet.org) which has been developed over the past seven years for wildland fire managers throughout Oklahoma. Applications include wildfire anticipation/suppression, prescribed fire, and smoke management. Users include multiple federal and state agencies, as well as local fire departments, emergency managers, and private landowners. OK-FIRE is a program of the Oklahoma Mesonet, the state’s automated weather station network.

With respect to wildfire, benefits of using OK-FIRE include better anticipation of high fire danger conditions, guidance for optimal staffing levels, and tracking existing and forecast weather and fire danger conditions during the wildfire itself, leading to more effective suppression strategies.  With respect to prescribed fire, OK-FIRE can help in the planning and conducting of prescribed burns, as well as in providing guidance for smoke management.

Shooting Sports Training: Haskell County is hosting a 4-H Shooting Sports training Nov. 2-3 in Stigler. Disciplines being taught include archery, air and .22 rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun and coordinator. Each county must have a coordinator in place or something going through the coordinator training in order to have certified instructors. Registration materials are available from County Extension Offices or by contacting Cheryl Newberry, Southeast District 4-H Program Specialist at cheryl.newberry@okstate.edu.
