Global Horticulture Conference: Those who are interested in learning more about horticulture from around the world should make plans to attend the Global Horticulture Conference slated Nov. 7 at the Wes Watkins Center on the Oklahoma State University campus. Workshop topics include fruits from around the globe, agricultural development in war-torn countries, Italian Renaissance gardens, vegetables and flowers across the continents, basics of agriculture in less-developed countries, and an overview to food security issues in East Africa, just to name a few. Registration is $80, includes lunch, and is due by Oct. 29. The Botanic Garden at OSU members, County Extension Educators, Master Gardeners, and students may register for $60. No walk-ins or late registration will be accepted. Seating is limited so please register early. Vegetable Production and Marketing Educational Meeting: The 2012 Oklahoma Vegetable Production and Marketing Educational Meeting will take place Dec. 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Fairgrounds Community Building at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha. This event will provide useful information for market garden growers, commercial farmers, agricultural supply businesses, Extension Educators. Topics to be discussed include results of recent vegetable research, food safety, pest management (insect, disease, weed), packing shed layouts, and vegetable marketing. 
     There is a $10 registration fee for this year’s event and those planning to attend need to register by Dec. 3. To register, please call the Grady County Extension Office at 405-224-2216.  You also may register or send questions via email to brook.l.brandbury@okstate.edu

Condolences to: Cindy Griffith, retired Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences, Rogers County, on the death of her husband. Bill Griffith passed away Sept. 21. Funeral services took place Sept. 26 in Claremore. Cards may be mailed to Cindy at 1462 Paradise Parkway, Claremore, OK  74017.

OEAFCS Members Win Awards: Nineteen Oklahoma Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (OEAFCS) members traveled recently to Columbus, Ohio, for the National Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) meeting.  Members traveling to the NEAFCS meeting included Jean Bailey, Dewey County; Cindy Clampet, Love County; Debra Garrard-Foster, CNEP State Coordinator; Brenda Hill, Cleveland County; Tommie James, Bryan County; Ranel Lasley, Caddo County; Susan Lovelace, Creek County; Ginny McCarthick, Johnston County; Brenda Miller, Northeast District FCS Program Specialist; Jessica Riggin, Lincoln County; Susan Routh, Grady County; Brenda Sheik, CNEP State Evaluator; Barbara Tricinella, Area CNEP Coordinator (Tulsa County); and Lani Vasconcellos, Southeast District FCS Program Specialist. In addition, Dr. Jorge Atiles, Joyce Martin, and Dorothy Wilson, State Program Leader, Langston University, were in attendance at this meeting.  Dr. Betty Brannan (retired) and JoAnn Brannan (retired) also traveled to Columbus to attend the national meeting.
     Susan Routh, Ranel Lasley, and Jean Bailey served as voting delegates for Oklahoma during the Southern Region and National Business meetings. Brenda Sheik served on the credential committee, and Susan Routh was elected to the national Nominating Committee.
     Oklahoma was well represented in the Southern Region and National awards programs this year. Congratulations to all the award  winners:

COLLEGE CORNER

Horticulture Club Pansy Sale: The OSU Horticulture Club Judging Team is selling pansies. Each flat contains 18 plants and costs $16.50. Available colors include azure (sky blue), black, blue, orange-red (fire), orange, purple, red, rose, white, yellow, and mixed colors. Orders must be placed by Oct. 12. Select color and number of flats and order by email at kristen.willis@okstate.edu. Please include your name, email address and phone number. Customers will be notified by email with order confirmation and pickup times, which should be sometime in mid-October. Payment is due at pickup at the OSU teaching greenhouses.
