 CURRENT EVENTS

Oklahoma City State Fair: The Oklahoma City Fair entry/judging day is Wednesday, September 12, 2012. It will be in the west section of the Creative Arts (formerly Hobbies, Arts & Crafts) Building.  It is east and a little south of the Space Needle, the south side of Arch (miniature of the St. Louis Arch).  The schedule is as follows:

7:30 – 11:00 a.m. -  4-H exhibits need to arrive and be placed in the proper section and class during this timeframe.  Make sure to plan your arrival in order to allow yourself time to distribute all items prior to 11:00 a.m.  Items not in place by 11:00 a.m. may be disqualified.

10:30 a.m. - Chairperson of Judging Assistants’ Orientation Meeting

11:00 a.m. - Judges’ Orientation Meeting

11:30 a.m. - Judging of 4-H Exhibits Begins

Women in Agriculture Seminar: The second Northwest Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Seminar will take place Sept 18 at the Northwest Technology Center in Fairview. The emphasis of the seminar is to provide information and insights useful to women who are involved in agriculture through either farming or ranching. Registration is $5 and begins at 9:30 a.m. To reserve a seat, contact the Northwest Technology Center at 580-227-3708, or the Major County OSU Extension Office at 580-227-3786.

Tree Care Conference: Arborists, nursery professionals, urban foresters, landscape managers, landscape architects, master gardeners, and advanced hobbyists have an opportunity to get the latest research-based information regarding tree care. Slated Oct. 3 at the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU campus in Stillwater, the Tree Care Issues seminar will focus on all aspects of tree care. Registration is $80, includes lunch, and must be postmarked by Sept. 24. Master Gardeners, Extension Educators, members of The Botanic Garden at OSU, and students may register for $60. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the conference will conclude at 4:15 p.m. For additional registration information, please contact Stephanie Larimer at 405-744-5404, or email at stephanie.larimer@okstate.edu. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ag Producers May Apply for Right to do Prescribed Burn: The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association has worked with Gov. Mary Fallin to allow landowners to apply for an exemption for agriculture burning during the statewide burn ban. Agricultural producers have a genuine need to be able to manage their cropland, range, and pasture. However, producers must complete the current form available from the Forestry Services Division of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (Form AG-2012-01); have the form approved, in writing, by the local fire department with suppression responsibility for the area being burned; construct adequate firelines and have sufficient personnel and equipment on hand to control the fire; wind speeds must not exceed 15 miles per hour; and must notify neighbors of the planned burn. Producers may download the form here.

Congratulations to: David Adams, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Muskogee County, and his wife, Jamie, on the birth of their son. John Isaac was born Aug. 30, weighed 9 pounds, and was 20 ½ inches long. He is welcomed home by big sister Meleah.

Congratulations to: Sarah Bible, Northeast District Secretary, and her husband, Jesse, on the birth of their son. Deklan Reid was born Sept. 2, weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 19 inches long.

Condolences to: Marci Snedden-Brunger, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Wagoner County, on the death of her father. Mike Snedden passed away Sept. 5. Funeral services will take place at a later date. Cards may be sent to Marci at 25659 W. State Hwy 51, Wagoner, OK  74467.
