Two OK-FIRE Workshops in Norman in August: Two full-day OK-FIRE computer training workshops will take place in Norman during August.  The first workshop is slated Aug. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel. This workshop is part of Training Day before the state conference of the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM). The second workshop will take place Aug. 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the National Weather Center (NWC).  J. D. Carlson, OSU fire meteorologist and OK-FIRE program director, will direct the workshops.  Both workshops are free and open to the public. Registration, however, is required. Attendees will need to bring their notebook computers with wireless connectivity (no iPads or other tablets).
To register for the OEM Aug. 20 workshop, please go to the OEM Training Day registration site at http://www.ok.gov/triton/modules/calendar/calendar.php?calendar_seq=5. Click on “Register Now” to the right of the OK-FIRE workshop title. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 17 or until space is filled.
To register for the NWC Aug. 31 workshop, please contact Elaina Wright via email at elaina.wright@okstate.edu, or by phone at 405-744-5425 and provide your name, affiliation, email address, and phone number.  Applications will be accepted until Aug. 27 or until space is filled.
The workshops will consist of a combination of presentations and computer lab exercises in which the attendees will get hands-on experience with the OK-FIRE website. Wildfire, as well as prescribed fire, applications will be covered.
OK-FIRE (http://okfire.mesonet.org) is a program of the Oklahoma Mesonet for wildland fire management.  OK-FIRE uses the Oklahoma Mesonet for current/recent conditions and an 84-hour forecast to predict weather, fire danger, and smoke dispersion conditions out to three days in the future. Accordingly, with respect to wildfire, OK-FIRE is useful for monitoring not only current fire danger conditions, but also, with its predictive component, for suppression strategies on existing fires and assessing fire danger potential over the next three days, which can aid in determining staffing levels. With respect to prescribed fire, attendees will learn how to use the system to safely plan for and monitor conditions during a prescribed burn.ANNOUNCEMENTS
