NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

NACAA Meeting a Success: I attended the National Association of County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference in Tulsa for much of this past week and was very impressed with the quality and organization of the meeting and the dedication shown by the Educators/Agents working at the meetings. Those working hard to make this a successful conference included not only Agricultural Agents, but also a significant number of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) and 4-H Youth Development Educators. I am sure that the Ag Educators/Agents would agree that they could not have managed the conference nearly as well, and perhaps not at all, without the help of the FCS and 4-H Youth Development Educators who were there working side-by-side with them.
My wife and I heard very favorable comments everywhere we went, from praise for the child care services and youth activities, to praise for the general sessions and breakout sessions. I visited with many of the exhibitors, and they too were impressed with the quality, organization, and size of the conference. A common comment of the exhibitors was that the individuals they spoke with were very knowledgeable of their products and asked good questions. What can I say, I am not surprised, after all they are county ag educators/agents.
It was great to see everyone working together as a team to make Oklahoma Extension proud to be hosts of a national meeting of this magnitude.  It was great for Oklahoma, and the people who are Oklahoma Extension, to be showcased so exceptionally well. Orange was indeed prevalent at the conference and shining brightly. I would like to say thank you for a job well done to everyone involved in hosting this National Conference!

Current Events

OSU’s Big 3 Field Days Slated Next Week: Thousands of participants are riding herd on fun and knowledge in equal parts July 20-22 at Oklahoma State University's Animal Science Sheep, Beef and Swine Field Days event. The field days allow the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources to provide educational opportunities about the animal agriculture industry in a fun way, a combination that has made them extremely popular. Each field day takes place at the OSU Animal Science Arena located on McElroy Road, west of Western Avenue on the university’s Stillwater campus.
The three-day event will see more than 100 awards and scholarships be presented to high-performing participants. Each judging contest has numerous classes, allowing adults as well as junior- and senior-division 4-H and FFA members to compete.

4-H’ers to be Recognized at Honor Night Assembly: Oklahoma’s top 4-H’ers will be recognized July 29 at the Honor Night Assembly during the 89th State 4-H Roundup. This event, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Gallagher Iba Arena on the Oklahoma State University campus, is steeped in the 4-H tradition of recognizing the many achievements of club members from across the state.
Honor Night is a wonderful opportunity for the public to come see what great things Oklahoma 4-H’ers are capable of doing. Record book winners and scholarship recipients who are recognized during the Honor Night Assembly will walk away with a total of more than $50,000 in educational scholarships. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of generous donors who believe in the positive impact 4-H has on today’s youth.
Emcees for the evening’s program are no strangers to the Oklahoma 4-H Program. Both Missy Conner Quintero and Kent Gardner spent many years as active 4-H’ers, and each culminated their 4-H careers when they were inducted into the State 4-H Hall of Fame the same year.
For additional information about the Honor Night Assembly or State 4-H Roundup, contact Stewart at 405-744-7960.
