CURRENT EVENTS

Retirement Reception: Following an Extension career that spans more than 30 years, Bill Burton, Area Extension Specialist, Agricultural Economics, Northeast District, is set to retire at the end of the year. A retirement reception will take place Dec. 2 at the Northeast District Extension Office, 3007 Azalea Park Dr., Muskogee. Please RSVP by Nov. 23 to rachel.allen@okstate.edu, or call 918-686-7800.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

OALP Tours Northeastern Oklahoma: The Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program held its 11th seminar in northeastern Oklahoma Nov. 9-11. Class XV participants toured the Tallgrass Prairie, Hughes Ranch, J-M Farms, Coleman Theatre, EPA Superfund Site, DNA Genetics, Brashear Concrete Feed Bunks and Water Tanks, Hibbard Farms, and Port of Catoosa. They also heard a presentation about the role of small banks in a challenging economy from Welch State Bank personnel. Crossing the border into Arkansas, they heard several presentations from Walmart personnel and toured the Walmart Express in Gravette. The community service projects involved moving tables, chairs, pews, lumber, a piano, a pool table, benches, and other equipment at the GAP – God and People, and hanging used clothes at The Main Place, both in Miami.  The class will have its final regular seminar on Jan. 11-13 before embarking on their international trip to Scotland and Ireland in February.

AWARDS

Sensory Garden Honored: The Sensory Garden, which is part of The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University, has been honored as a finalist in the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Statewide Environmental Excellence Competition. The award was presented to Mike Schnelle, Michael Holmes, Dale Maronek, Karen Williams, Mike Shuttic, and Laura Payne.

Plant and Soil Sciences Students Honored at International Meeting: Twelve Oklahoma State University students were recognized for excellence and achievement at the 2011 International Annual Meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America. Those honored include:
