CURRENT EVENTS

Space Still Available: Camp TURF still has openings for its two week residential academy. This camp takes place on the Oklahoma State University campus and is slated  June 12-24.  Camp TURF is open to all Oklahoma high school students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of school. The camp is free and funded by a grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. ANNOUNCEMENTS

OALP Meets in Oklahoma City: The Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program (OALP) held its sixth seminar in Oklahoma City April 20-22. On the first day, Class XV participants learned about the legislative process, visited with several legislators, learned about Oklahoma Farm Bureau, and visited with Secretary of Agriculture Jim Reese. As part of their community service project, the class sorted and packaged food at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. The second day they toured an alpaca farm, organic farm, Blue and Gold Sausage Company, ODAFF, and Producers Cooperative Oil Mill.  The final day was focused on water issues including the State Water Plan, water laws, tribal issues, and water needs of Tarrant County in Texas. The class was excited to learn that their international trip will take them to Scotland and Ireland. OALP Class XV is looking forward to the next seminar in north central Oklahoma and Kansas May 11-13.

Congratulations to: Al Sutherland, Assistant Extension Specialist, Mesonet, and his wife, Regina, on their birth of their granddaughter. Nacona Jewel McMurtry was born April 22, weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces, and was 19 inches long.

Condolences to: The family of Janice Brendle, former FCS Educator in Greer County. She passed away April 22. Funeral services took place April 27 at the magnum First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

Condolences to: Kim Davis, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Stephens County, on the death of her father. Orville “Cotton” Davis passed away April 27. Funeral services took place April 30 at the Addington Baptist Church. Memorial may be made to Hastings Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 252, Ryan, OK 73565. Cards may be sent to Kim at the Stephens County Extension Office, 2002 S. 13th, Duncan 73533.
