NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Staff and Program Development Office:  As you may have already heard, Joyce Martin Sherrer, retired from her position effective July 31, 2017.  For upcoming items that you would have sent to Joyce, please send to her part-time assistant Eileen Desmond at eileen.d@okstate.edu.  Eileen will be working closely with us throughout the year to help keep things on schedule.  If you need to contact Eileen, her phone number is 405-744-7760.

CURRENT EVENTS

Market Gardening School Kicks Off Aug. 29: Oklahoma State University is teaming up with the Noble Research Institute to host the fall 2017 Oklahoma Market Gardening School. The course is geared toward those who are established in the business, as well as those who are interested in exploring a new enterprise. The eight-week course will begin Aug. 29 and meet weekly on Tuesday evenings through Oct. 17 at the Noble Research Institute, 2510 Sam Noble Pkwy, Ardmore, Oklahoma. Classes will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registration is $60 per individual or $90 per couple. Couples will receive one set of handouts. The class is limited to 50 participants and preregistration is required. Online registration is available here. To register by mail, send the registration form from the OSU’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture website, along with the registration fee, to Oklahoma Market Gardening Course, attn: Stephanie Larimer, 358 Ag Hall, Stillwater, OK  74078-6027 or call her at 405-744-5404.

Oklahoma Beef Conference: The Northwest Oklahoma Beef Conference is slated Aug. 31 at the Chisholm Train Expo Center in Enid. Burke Teichert, owner of Teichert Management and Consulting, will serve as keynote speaker. Teichert, who writes a monthly column for Beef Magazine, will provide his approach of purposeful planning in his presentation titled “Five Essentials for Successful Ranch Management.”  Other topics in this year’s program provided by excellent speakers include Benefits and Management of Preconditioning, Better Health for Improved Herd Efficiency, and the Do’s and Don’ts of Grazing Cover Crops. The registration for this year’s event is $10. Please RSVP to the Garfield County Extension office at 580-237-1228 with registration fee by Aug. 25. Registration the day of the conference is $15 per person.

Share Your County Fair Social Media Contest: The Oklahoma 4-H Foundation is excited to announce a new social media contest for Oklahoma counties! Generate awareness for the 4-H organization and promote your county 4-H program by sharing your county fair pictures on social media. It is easy to participate. Upload your county fair pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #ShareYourCountyFair and tag @Oklahoma4h. Be sure to include your county name in the caption. Beckham County Extension Office Has Moved: The move is complete for the Beckham County Extension Office. The new address is 301 E. Main, Sayre, Oklahoma, 73662. Telephone and fax numbers remain the same.

Congratulations to: Erin Metcalf, Program Assistant, Alfalfa County, and her husband, Neil, on the birth of their daughter. Sterling Lyn Metcalf was born July 27, weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 20 inches long. She is welcomed home by big brother, Stetson. Congratulations!

Condolences to: Susan Stepp, Administrative Support Specialist, Marshall County, on the death of her father. Joe Bertoldo passed away July 22. Funeral services took place July 26 at Brumley-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in McAlester.

Condolences to: The family of Dorothy Coffee, retired Administrative Support Specialist, Latimer County. Dorothy passed away Aug. 9. A memorial service took place Aug. 16 at Baldwin Cemetery near Red Oak, Oklahoma.

Condolences to: Larry Sams, retired Extension Educator, Northeast District, on the death of his wife. Phyllis Sams passed away Aug. 11. Funeral services took place Aug. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Stillwater. Memorials may be made in her name to the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, 205 4-H Youth Development Building, Stillwater, OK  74078.
