CURRENT EVENTS
Irrigation Conference: The 2017 Oklahoma Irrigation Conference will take place March 1 at Western Oklahoma State College, 2801 N. Main, Altus. Topics on the agenda include cotton irrigation, smart irrigation scheduling, irrigation water quality, pumping cost and efficiency, irrigation economics, and more. Participants can receive 5.0 Certified Crop Advisor CEUs in Soil and Water Management and 4.5 Irrigation Association Tier 1 CEUs. Registration is $15. More information is available here.
Specialty Crops Workshop: Learn more about season extension techniques and improving intensive specialty crop production at the Specialty Crops Workshop. Slated March 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event will take place at the Oklahoma County Cooperative Extension Conference Center, 2500 NE 63rd, in Oklahoma City. The program will include education on making and using compost, proper market size and condition for select vegetables, uses for “ugly”fruits and vegetables, and more. The afternoon will include a tour of farms in the Oklahoma City and Edmond area that use high-tunnels (hoop houses) for vegetable production. Registration is $15 per person and $5 for students. Certified Healthy Department Applications: Certified Healthy Department applications are live
at CHD
Application. If your department is not a Certified Healthy Department, your
group is encouraged to complete an application for recognition this year. If
your department is currently
certified, you will need to re-apply to maintain CHD status. Applications
will be accepted until March 10.
CHD Innovators, mark your calendar for the
next two quarterly meetings slated Aug. 24 and Dec. 15. These meetings will
take place in Student Union 416 on the OSU campus.
Updates in the World of Wheat: Things are moving and shaking around the state when it comes to wheat. Here are just a few updates:

Congratulations to: Randy Pirtle, Northeast District Director, and his wife, Susan, on the birth of their first grandchild. Maverick Killian Scribner was born Feb. 9 in Champaign, Illinois. He weighed 9 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 21 ½ inches long. Maverick is the son of their oldest daughter, Aspen Pirtle, and Jesse Scribner.
Congratulations to: Carol Hart, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Comanche County, and her husband, Daryl, on the birth of their granddaughter. Caroline Pearl Hendricks was born Feb. 21, weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Proud parents are Carly and Dylan Hendricks.
Condolences to: Pat Tolson, Administrative Support Assistant, Pittsburg County, and her husband, Troyce, on the death of her mother-in-law. Wilma Tolson passed away Feb. 7. Funeral services took place Feb. 10 at Bishop Funeral Home in McAlester. Cards may be sent to Troyce and Pat at 4 Golf View Circle, McAlester, OK 74501.
Condolences to: Randy Pirtle, Northeast District Director, and his wife, Susan, on the death of his father-in-law. Kenneth Thornbrough passed away Feb. 18. Funeral services took place Feb. 21 at the Kiesau Memorial Chapel in Clinton. Cards may be sent to Randy and Susan at 3007 Azalea Park Dr., Muskogee, OK 74401-2285.
