CURRENT EVENTS

Mingo Valley Research Station Field Day: The Mingo Valley Research Station Field Day will take place Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. in Bixby. Formerly known as the Vegetable Research Station, topics for the field day will include weed control in soybean and grain sorghum; soybean diseases and variety trials; grape and variety trials in blackberry, peach and apple; squash and watermelon trials; as well as a turf research update. Participants are invited to stay for a provided meal as well as time to visit and ask questions. The research station is located at 13711 S. Mingo Road. For more information, contact Butch Havener or Caleb Carroll at the Mingo Valley Research Station Office at 918-369-2441.

Fall Crops Tour: Mark your calendar for Sept. 1 for the Fall Crops Tour at the Oklahoma Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Goodwell. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. The event will include soil and water conservation, corn strip trials and sorghum variety trials. Please email Jenni Forman at jenni.forman@okstate.edu before Aug. 26 to register. Lunch will be provided

Magness Set to Retire: A retirement reception for Tonya Magness, Coordinator, Academic Programs, will take place Sept. 1, 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in 106 Ag Hall. Refreshments will be provided.  Thank you Tonya for your 32 years of dedicated service to Oklahoma State University.

OKSTMA Hosting Field Day: The Oklahoma Chapter of the Sports Turf Managers Association is hosting a sports-turf-centered field day Wed., Sept. 21 at the OSU Botanic Garden’s Turfgrass Research Center in Stillwater. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the program beings at 9:00 a.m. Lunch is at noon and the field day should conclude at 2:00 p.m. Keynote speaker is Kyle Waters, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Facilities at OSU. The field day will include all educational events, vendor demos, and lunch.
     All nonmembers and OKSTMA members are welcome. The event will be free for OKSTMA members while there will be a $20 registration fee for nonmembers of OKSTMA at the event. However, if you do become a member at the field day it will count for the year of 2017. Membership levels are as follows:

Sports Turf Manager- $35
Sports Turf Associate (assistant) -$20
Academic-$25
Student - $10Industry- $100

2016 Clover Classic: Oct. 17 is the date for the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation’s 2016 Clover Classic Golf Tournament. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Stillwater Country Club. Various levels of sponsorship are available, including Diamond - $1,200; Gold - $1,000; Team - $800; Hole - $300; and Individual Player - $200. ESP Grants Available: The ESP Professional Develop Grant awards four $1,000 grants nationally to interdisciplinary teams to develop a project to stimulate development of Extension professionals. Projects must be submitted by an interdisciplinary team. Fifty percent of project planning team members must be ESP members with dues paid for the current year. Projects should be able to be replicated by other ESP chapters. The online application is available here. Congratulations to: Gayle Hiner, Communications Specialist, Agricultural Communications Specialist, on the birth of her grandson. Kade Miles-Colin Hiner was born July 27, weighed 8 pounds, and was 19 ½ inches long. He is welcomed home by big sister Evangeline. Proud parents are Kyle and Shaunalynn Hiner.

Condolences to: Gina Peek, Associate Professor and Extension Housing Specialist, on the death of her father. William Albert Gold passed away July 12. Private funeral services took place on July 14 in Racine, WI.

Condolences to: The family of Sam E. Curl, former Dean and Director of DASNR. He passed away Aug. 2 in Granbury, Texas. He served as Dean from 1997 to 2004. Graveside services took place Aug. 5 in Acton, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dean Sam E. Curl Agricultural Leadership Endowment at Texas Tech University; Acton United Methodist Church or the Tolar Volunteer Fire Department. Cards may be sent to his wife, Mary, at 2615 Waters Drive, Granbury, Texas  76048.

Condolences to: Judy Montgomery, Administrative Support Specialist, Okfuskee County, on the death of her brother. David Hugh Fox passed away Aug. 5. Funeral services took place Aug. 11 in Okemah.

Condolences to: The Family of Dave Sparks, retired Area Food-Animal Quality and Health Specialist. He passed away Aug. 12. He was part of the OSU family from January 2006 through February 2014. A memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. TOMORROW, Aug. 20 at the family farm, Goat Hill Kikos, 9262 E. 243rd St., Porum, Oklahoma. Please bring your lawn chairs. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Cards may be sent to this same address. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation to your local hospice care provider or Cent Ministries, Inc., HC 68, Box 105, Nashoba, OK  74558.
