OK-FIRE Training Sessions Continue: There are several OK-FIRE training opportunities that will take place throughout the remainder of 2010. Registration Nearing for 2010 Cucurbit Meeting: Dec. 8 is the deadline to register for the 2010 Oklahoma Cucurbit Production and Marketing Educational Meeting. Slated Dec. 16, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the meeting will take place at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha. This year’s meeting will include topics that should be of interest to all vegetable growers including market gardeners and farmers market growers. Registration is $10 and includes the noon meal. Address Change: Please make note of the new address for the Seminole County OSU Extension Office. The new address is P.O. Box 1473, Wewoka, OK  74884.

Congratulations to: Jay Parker, Muskogee County Extension Educator, and his wife Shelley, on the birth of their daughter. Marley Kate was born Nov. 11, weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces, and was 19.8 inches long. 

Condolences to: Lani Vasconcellos, Southeast District Program Specialist,  on the passing of Art’s father, Arthur Vasconcellos, Sr. on November 1, 2010, in Sun City West, AZ.  Services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2010 in Sun City West at the Sunland Funeral Home. 

Condolences to: Brad Bain, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, and CED, McCurtain County, on the death of his grandmother. Eva Lois Strickland passed away Nov. 6. Funeral services took place Nov. 9 in Idabel. Cards may be sent to Brad and Stacey Bain, Rt. 2, Box 436, Valiant, OK  74764.

Condolences to: Dee Cooper, Northwest District Extension Director, on the death of his grandmother. Jewel Inez Cellan passed away November 2. A memorial service took place Nov. 8 in Fairfax.  Memorials may be made to the Fairfax Senior Citizens or the Fairfax Library, c/o Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home, PO. Box 237, Fairfax, OK 74637. Cards may be mailed to Dee and Renee Cooper, Rt. 1, Box 263B, Ringwood, OK 73768.

Condolences to: Jack Dale Wallace, retired Southeast District Area Livestock Specialist, on the death of his mother. Etta Jane Wallace passed away Nov. 14. A celebration of her life will take place Nov. 22 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel located at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City, Kan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mrs. Wallace’s memory to the Harry Hines Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS, 67202. Cards may be sent to Jack and Debby Wallace, 312 SE 10th St., Ada, OK  74820.

 

AWARDS

Damron Honored: Steve Damron, Professor, Animal Science, has been named the 2010 Oklahoma Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He was chosen for official recognition as one of 38 state award recipients, selected from more than 300 top professors in the United States.

Switchgrass Publication Wins Award: Oklahoma State University’s “Switchgrass Production Guide for Oklahoma” has been honored by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America. The publication was awarded a 2010 Extension Education Materials Program “Certificate of Excellence” at the recent ASA-CSSA-SSSA International Annual Meetings in Long Beach, Calif.
