NOTES FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Remembering Marvin and Bonnie Stone: Hearts are heavy on the Oklahoma State University campus following the tragedy during the Homecoming Parade on Oct. 24, which took the lives of four parade-goers, including two OSU employees, Dr. Marvin Stone and his wife Bonnie. Marvin was a pioneer and visionary in agricultural technology and part of the team that created GreenSeeker, a highly acclaimed technology for sensor-based, variable-rate application of nitrogen fertilizer. He had a special gift for engaging his students in the classroom, with many of them proclaiming him to be the best instructor they had in college. Although he did not have an official Extension appointment, he was always willing to step in and share, help or collaborate on Extension-related projects. His vision, humor and kind heart will truly be missed. Marvin came to OSU in 1982 in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and retired in 2006. He returned to campus in 2007 as a Regents Professor Emeritus until 2013.
Bonnie also was well-known on campus, working in a variety of positions. Most recently she served at the University level as Coordinator, Student Information Systems Operations and Training, from May 1998 until her death.
The family has directed memorial contributions to the Dr. Marvin Stone Endowed Scholarship (Fund #21-48300), care of the OSU Foundation, PO Box 1749, Stillwater, OK 74076. Online contributions may be made at http://bae.okstate.edu/scholarship/marvin-and-bonnie-stone-endowed-scholarship-fund/. A website with photos and remembrances may be found at http://nue.okstate.edu/Marvin_Stone.html. Agricultural Communications Services produced a video of DASNR’s Oct. 28 vigil and it may be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYO17Vdypwg&feature=youtu.be.
