There is Still Time to Register for Tree Care Conference: Gardeners have until Oct. 25 to register for the Tree Care Conference slated Nov. 3 at The Botanic Garden located west of Stillwater. Early registration is $80, which includes lunch, and must be postmarked by Oct. 25. Extension Educators, Master Gardeners, OBGA members, and students with student ID may pre-register at the discounted rate of $55. After Oct. 25 the registration is $125. Announcements

OALP Class XV Explores Southwestern Oklahoma: The Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program (OALP) had its second seminar in southwestern Oklahoma Oct. 13-15. Class XV participants learned about cotton, irrigation, wheat shuttle trains, hunting, native pasture management, range chickens, sheep, grapes, the wine industry, agritourism, no-till farming, cannas, sweet potatoes, peanuts, watermelons, greens, and hot peppers. OALP alumni in the Hydro area hosted class members in home-stays one evening and had great interactions. The community service project was moving the Hydro Food Pantry into its new location in the old high school, installing shelves, and sorting and stacking food and supplies.  The class is looking forward to Seminar 3 at the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore and the surrounding area on November 17-19.

Environmental Education Grants Now Available: The Oklahoma Environmental Quality Education Committee invites qualified individuals to apply for a grant to promote enthusiasm in young people for learning about the environment and natural resources. You must be an Oklahoma teacher, public or private (Pre K – 12), school environmental club, youth group leader, and/or organization with a youth component to apply for the grant. For more information about this grant opportunity, please go to http://www.deq.state.ok.us/pubs/lpd/eegrant10.pdf.

Applicants may apply for amounts from $100 up to $1,000 per grant. A total of $14,000 will be awarded in early 2011 to winning applicants. Eligible categories include:

  • Environmental club projects
  • Green school efforts
  • Edible school gardens
  • Outdoor classroom revitalization
  • Recycling and composting programs

Deadline for submission of grant applications is Dec. 1, 2010. Recipients will be selected by December 31, 2010. Examples of previous applications are available at: http://www.deq.state.ok.us/mainlinks/eepage.htm.

Congratulations to: Pat Thompson, Coordinator, 4-H Youth Development, on the birth of her granddaughter. Ellie Verona Reece was born Oct. 13, weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Her parents are Lance and Rebekah Reece.

Congratulations to: Mandy Gross, Manager, Communications Services, FAPC, and her husband, J.W., on the birth of their daughter. Keeley McKenna Gross was born Oct. 20, weighed 7 pounds, 11.5 ounces, and was 22 inches long. She is welcomed home by big sister Oakley.
