OK-FIRE Workshop Slated: A full-day OK-FIRE Computer Training Workshop will take place Sept. 12 at the National Weather Center (NWC) in Norman.  J. D. Carlson (jdc@okstate.edu), OSU Fire Meteorologist and OK-FIRE Program Director, will direct the workshop. The workshop is slated from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including a lunch break at the NWC.
The workshop will consist of a combination of presentations and computer lab exercises in which the attendees will get hands-on experience with the OK-FIRE website. Wildfire, as well as prescribed fire, applications will be covered. In addition to covering the major sections of the website (Weather, Fire, Smoke), other sections such as Satellite and Radar will be discussed, as will topics including fire detection by radar and satellite, the relationship of drought to fire danger, and burn bans. Operational procedures for assessing current and future fire danger using OK-FIRE also will be covered, along with the popular Fire Prescription Planner, a useful tool for planning a prescribed burn.
Registration is required and can be done by contacting Elaina Wright (elaina.wright@okstate.edu; 405-744-5425 or 405-744-5431) at Oklahoma State University and providing her with your name, affiliation, email address, and phone number. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 8 or until space (22 participants max) is filled. There is no cost for the workshop, aside from travel costs to and from Norman. Registrants should, if possible, bring their own notebook computers with wireless connectivity (no iPads or other tablets). If that is not possible, some notebook computers will be available onsite.
OK-FIRE (http://okfire.mesonet.org) is a program of the Oklahoma Mesonet for wildland fire management.
