CURRENT EVENTS

 

Women in Ag Conference Slated: The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, along with USDA’s Risk Management Agency, is pleased to announce the annual conference for Women in Agriculture and Small Business is slated Aug. 7-8 in Oklahoma City. The two-day conference offers a variety of sessions to assist participants in successfully managing risk for their families, farms and/or businesses. Concurrent sessions are offered from three tracks—agriculture, alternative enterprises and business & finance—with participants able to choose whatever session is of most value to them.

    The registration fee is $50 per person by July 25 or $60 per person after July 25. The registration fee includes two breakfasts, two lunches, and all breaks. Thursday evening attendees can choose to participate in a “Dine Around OKC” featuring locally owned Oklahoma restaurants. Block reservations will be made at each featured restaurant and participants can sign up during the day on Thursday to attend dinner at the restaurant of their choice. The Dine Around will be coordinated through the Women in Ag Conference, but participants are asked to pay their own way Thursday night.

Congratulations to: Jessica Riggin, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences, and CED, Lincoln County, and her husband, Zack, on the birth of their daughter. Sophie Leighton was born June 5, weighed 5 pounds, 14.4 ounces, and was 18 inches long. She is welcomed home by big sister Amelia.

 

Condolences to: Charles Cox, retired Assistant Director and State 4-H Program Leader, on the death of his mother. Billie Lee Peters Cox passed away May 28. Funeral services took place June 2 in Madill. Memorials may be made to The Baptist Home for Girls, 13976 Anthony Lane, Madill, OK  73446, or the Marshall County Expo and Extension Fund, c/o Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, 205 4-H Youth Development Office, Stillwater, OK  74075. Condolences to: The family of Billy Bob Tucker, retired Extension Agronomist and Project Leader, and Regents Professor. He passed away June 5. Funeral service took place June 10 in Stillwater. He began his OSU career in 1956 and retired in 1988. Memorials may be made in his name to the Undergraduate Scholarship in Soil Science, c/o OSU Foundation, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, OK  74076. Condolences to: Dea Rash, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development, Payne County, on the death of her father-in-law. Leon Rash passed away June 3. The family held a private funeral service. Cards may be sent to Dea and family at 3717 Broderick, Stillwater, OK  74075.

 

Condolences to: The family of Robert “Bob” Totusek, retired Animal Science Department Head. “Dr. Tot” passed away June 6. A memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. June 23 at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater following a private graveside service. A public Celebration of Life will take place at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum at 2:30 p.m. in Oklahoma City. Dr. Tot joined the Animal Husbandry faculty at then Oklahoma A&M College in 1952. He coached the Livestock Judging teams and mentored hundreds of students. He was named Department Head in July 1976, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. Memorials may be made in his honor to Oklahoma State University, c/o OSU Foundation, P.O. Condolences to: Jodi White, CNEP Nutrition Education Assistant, Tulsa County, on the death of her mother. Billie Jo Buckley passed away June 8.   Funeral services will take place June 13 at 1:00 at Full Family Out-Reach Ministry, 1609 North Evanston Ave, Tulsa, OK.  Cards may be sent to Jodi at OSU Extension, 4115 E. 15th St, Tulsa, OK 74112.

 

Condolences to: The family of Betty James, retired Senior Unit Assistant, Agriculture Human Resources. She passed away June 9. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. today, June 13, at Mehan Union Church, 8300 E. 68th St., Stillwater.  Betty worked in DASNR HR from December 1979 until her retirement in July 2010. She returned to DASNR on a temporary basis from September 2010 until June 2011. Memorials may be made in her honor to Oklahoma State University, Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, c/o OSU Foundation, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, OK  74076. AWARDS

 

Trio Wins National Award: Congratulations to Courtney Keck, Malarie Gotcher, and Dr. Mike Schnelle for their contributions to E-1037 Drought Tolerant Plant Selections for Oklahoma. It has been chosen for the National Extension Division Award by the American Society of Horticultural Science. Also thanks to Oklahoma City Utilities for supporting these efforts.
