Pirtle New Northeast District Director: Please join me in welcoming Randy Pirtle as he officially joins our administrative team as the Northeast District Extension Director on June 2. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Randy comes to the district office from Washington County where he served as the 4-H Educator from 1985-1986. In 1986 he assumed the position of Ag Educator and County Extension Director. A couple of his career highlights include creating and implementing the OSU Cattle Conference and Trade Show that has been held each year since 1986 in Dewey. This program has received regional and national recognition for its effectiveness. He also started the Washington County Master Gardener program in 1999, and to date, more than 250 volunteers have been trained in home horticulture and have volunteered more than 200,000 hours annually. Randy also has served as coach of the Washington County 4-H Livestock Judging Teams.  Randy’s livestock judging teams have consistently ranked high in competitions, including the National Swine Registry Contests, NEO A&M Interscholastics, Coffeyville Kansas Interscholastics, State Fair of Oklahoma, Tulsa State Fair, and numerous other contests. I’m confident Randy’s Extension background will serve him well in his new role.

Extension Veterinarians Available for Seminars: Dr. Elisabeth Giedt and Dr. D.L. Step, both with the Office of Continuing Education, Extension and Community Engagement at the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences at OSU, are available to counties who wish to host a seminar on topics affecting the health and well-being of the animals in your area. One topic that may be of interest is anaplasmosis, also known as yellow bag or yellow fever. Parasitic organisms infect the red blood cells of cattle, sheep, and goats. This causes the host body to remove the red blood cells from the circulation. Anaplasmosis is spread by ticks, blood sucking insects and blood on instruments. Castration, ear tagging, dehorning, and tattooing instruments also can spread the disease. If your county is interested in hosting a seminar on anaplasmosis, or other health-related animal topics, please contact Dr. Giedt or Dr. Step at 405-744-7672.
