FAPC to Hold Oil and Oilseed Processing Workshops: The Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center at Oklahoma State University will offer two “hands-on” oil and oilseed processing workshops in room 201 of the FAPC. The first workshop, Oilseed Processing: Pre-treatment and Extraction, will be held May 19-20, and the second, Oil Refining & Preparation for Edible Applications and Conversion to Biodiesel, will take place June 16-17. The first day of each workshop will consist of presentations, while day two will feature demonstrations. The deadline to register for the first workshop is May 11, and June 8 for the second workshop. The registration fee is $300 to attend one workshop, or $500 when attending both. Centennial 4-H Family Award: Families who have a long standing history of involvement in 4-H are encouraged to apply for the Centennial Families Award, a special Centennial award recognizing families who have had three or more generations in Oklahoma 4-H. You can download the application form at http://oklahoma4h.okstate.edu/focus/2009/april/attachments/applicationaward.pdf. Applications are due by Aug. 1. Winners will be notified by August 31 and will be recognized at the Green Tie Gala on Nov. 6. Edwards to Take Office: Jeff Edwards, Assistant Professor, Plant and Soil Sciences, and Extension Small Grains Specialist, has been elected as Division C-3 Chair-Elect for the Crop Science Society of America.

Shelton Attends Bug Summit: Kevin Shelton, Pesticide Safety Education Program Coordinator, attended EPA's Bed Bug Summit held in Washington, D.C. He participated in the roundtable discussions and provided input into the decision-making process for addressing bed bug management. The group discussed research needs, the role of government (all levels), consumer education and communication, pest control applicator education, and the role of property owners/mangers in addressing bed bug infestations.

Congratulations to: Beth Peters, Grant County Extension Senior Secretary, on the birth of her granddaughter. Ellison Laura Taylor was born April 17, weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 20 inches long. Ellison joins her parents, Scott and Laura Taylor, and big brother, Braden.


Smith Honored: Damon Smith, Assistant Professor, Entomology and Plant Pathology, and Extension State Specialist, recently received the New Extension Educator Award of Merit. This award is given through Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture. The Award is given to an Extension Educator who has demonstrated a commitment to a career in Extension education and is deemed by the review panel to exhibit meritorious extension education, but who has no more than five concurrent years experience in Extension.
