4-H Family Horse Camp: Oklahoma 4-H’ers and their families who enjoy camping with horses should make plans to attend the Statewide 4-H Family Horse Camp slated May 26-28 at the Great Salt Plains State Park near Jet, Okla. The camp is intended to educate youth and adults in camping with horses with minimal damage to land or water quality. The camp will help 4-H’ers and their families learn more about safety, stabling, tying, trail riding, overnight camping, environmental concerns, grounds keeping, biodiversity, seed travel, watersheds, photography, and integrated pest management concerns. The camp is open to 4-H’ers ages 9 and up, along with their parents, guardian, or other adult relative. Siblings ages 7-9 who are enrolled in the 4-H Cloverbud program are eligible to attend the camp. Camp registration is $50 per person and is due by May 15.  For more information, contact Tommy Puffinbarger, Alfalfa County Extension Educator, at 580-596-3131.

FCS Impact Team Learns about Research: Dr. Michael Crutcher, Oklahoma’s State Commissioner of Health, was the luncheon speaker during “Healthy Oklahoma“ FCS Impact Program Team In-Service held April 11 in Oklahoma City. Crutcher shared many statistics regarding the low status of health among Oklahomans, his vision for reducing health risk behaviors leading to a healthier status, and opportunities for partnering with Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. Traci House, Director of Wellness Programs at Oklahoma State Department of Health was also on hand. During the team in-service, Dr. Nancy Betts, Department Head of Nutritional Sciences, College of Human Environmental Sciences, OSU, and Nutritional Sciences graduate student Ashley Serrano, discussed research with parents and parental views on barriers to increased health and physical activity, eating habits, and similar family issues. Team members will host focus groups to discuss these topics. The team reviewed the draft protocol providing insight for revisions, and assisted with potential survey questions. Team members not hosting focus groups will assist with research via parent surveys around the state. This research is part of the OCES/OAES Targeted Initiative Program grant project that draws to a conclusion in September 2008.

Condolences to: Connie Walker, Administrative Assistant, Animal Science, and Becky Walker, Pontotoc County Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, on the death of their father-in-law and grandfather. Lester V. Walker passed away April 7.  Funeral services took place April 13 at Strode Funeral Home Chapel, Stillwater.
