FAPC to Hold Basic HACCP Workshop on April 11-12: The Food and Agricultural Products Center is holding a Basic HACCP Workshop on April 11-12, in room 201 of the FAPC.  The focus of the workshop is to help participants learn how to develop and implement Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points for their meat processing companies. The cost of the workshop is $300 for Oklahoma participants and $350 for out-of-state participants.  To register for the workshop, call (405) 744-6277, or e-mail karenl.smith@okstate.edu. FAPC Roundtable Meeting to Discuss Food Safety: The Food and Agricultural Products Center is holding a Roundtable meeting on April 25 in room 120 of the FAPC. The meeting will feature a presentation by Peter Muriana, FAPC Food Microbiologist, on “Guidelines for Conducting Listeria Monocytogenes Challenge Testing of Foods.” There is no registration fee, and lunch will be provided.  To register, please call (405) 744-6277, e-mail karenl.smith@okstate.edu, or go to www.fapc.biz/pages/roundtable.


OEAFCS Members Appointed to Committees: Three members of the Oklahoma Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences have been appointed to serve on subcommittees of the National Extension Association of Family & Consumer Sciences. Those selected include:

  • Kathy Enyart, Ottawa County, FCS/4H Ext. Educator, Program Development Committee.
  • Gloria King, Southwest District FCS Program Specialist, Arrangements Committee.
  • Brenda Sheik, CNEP Evaluation, Ceremony Committee. 

Condolences to: Janna Kelly, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences, and CED, Pontotoc County, on the death of her grandmother. “MaMaw” Edwards passed away April 5. Funeral services will take place April 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dalton Funeral Home in Durant. Cards may be sent to Janna at 13919 CR 3502, Ada, OK  74820.

Top 10 CASNR Students Recognized: The top 10 senior students enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources were recognized during the annual banquet. These students demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, and service during their undergraduate experience. The Top 10 Seniors are:

In addition, Blake Bixler was named the recipient of the Paul and Mary Hummer Outstanding Senior Award.

CASNR Faculty/Staff Recognized at Scholarship Banquet: Students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources were not the only ones recognized for their achievements during the recent CASNR banquet. Also receiving awards were:

  • Karen Hickman, Associate Professor, Natural Resources and Ecology Management, Outstanding Advisor
  • Kristin Novotny, Animal Science, Outstanding Professional Staff
  • Bailey Norwood, Assistant Professor, Agricultural Economics, Alpha Zeta Outstanding Teaching Award

Agricultural Producers Receive Awards: Two agriculture producers received the Master Agronomist Award at the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences Scholarship and Awards Banquet that took place April 5. Alan Mindemann, Apache, and Brent Rendel, Miami, were honored. Mindemann has been a strong soil conservationist and clear leader in no-till farming for more than 10 years.  He has been a featured speaker at numerous meetings and conferences and always has time to help his neighbors with agronomic problems.  Rendel, a 1986 graduate of OSU, manages a diversified grain and livestock operation with his father.  He is a member of Ag. Leadership Class XII.  He strongly supports Extension programs by providing land, labor, and equipment for variety test plots, and has numerous GreenSeeker corn and wheat RAMP plots on his farm.
