Impact Team Awarded $25,000: The Oklahoma Leadership and Community Development Impact Team, under the direction of co-team leaders Kevin Hackett, Northwest District 4-H Youth Development Specialist, and Karla Knoepfli, Assistant Extension Specialist, Volunteer and Leadership Development, has been awarded $25,000 in funding under the Rural Youth Development Program Engaging Youth, Serving Community for year 5 (EYSC5). The team received funding  last year in the same amount for five counties, including Caddo, Creek, Bryan, Pittsburg, and Pottawatomie, to train youth and adult teams to determine a need in their respective county/community, research it, and hold a public forum on the topic.

This year’s proposal will give the same counties some seed money to address their identified problem through a Community Development Plan they put together. The training that youth and adults from the core counties received last year will be expanded to the remainder of the 14 counties on the impact team and to Oklahoma 4-H and District Leadership Team members. The grant is funded by USDA through the National 4-H Council.

Interns Selected for Summer 2007: This summer OCES is offering 12 paid internships for upper classmen and graduate students in county offices. The purpose of the program is to encourage students to seek permanent employment with OCES following graduation. There were 29 applicants for the 12 positions. The written applications were screened and the top candidates interviewed for the positions. The students will work 8-12 weeks in a county office and will not only shadow the staff to learn more about OCES, but will also develop and teach some educational programs. Students will also submit reports of their experience and an outstanding intern will be selected at the end of the experience. The 12 hosting counties and the students interns include:
