Anniversary Celebrated: Extension’s County Training Program (CTP) celebrated its 25th anniversary last week at the County Officers and Deputies Association Conference.  The “founding fathers” of the CTP, Dr. Jim Shamblin, OSU Emeriti, Industrial Engineering, and Dr. Charles Burns, OSU Emeriti, Agriculture/OCES, were honored for their part in developing a training program for county officers and deputies created by statute in 1982.  Dr. Bob Whitson, Vice President, Dean and Director, Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, presented plaques of appreciation to Dr. Shamblin and Dr. Burns. Also taking part in the presentation were Notie Lansford, Program Leader, Clif Scott, former State Auditor and Inspector; and John Ward, former Executive Director of the Association of County Commissioners.

Northwest District OCES provided a booth on Wild Game Food Safety at the Third Annual Wildlife EXPO, sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.   The booth door prize registration collected responses from 1,000 EXPO participants on six wild game meat/fish handling practices.  A tally of the responses will be shared with state OCES staff and may be used in preparation for future grants, educational presentations and/or in-service development.

Another interesting outcome of the booth was an offer from Bass Pro Shop, Oklahoma City store Promotions Manager, for Extension to offer educational information and/or activities at their store.  Their first interest was for activities focusing on “Women in the Outdoors” in June of 2008.  Northwest District Extension staff looks forward to exploring how this new opportunity may benefit the total Extension program.

The EXPO was held at the Lazy E Arena September 28, 29 and 30 with the usual attendance of 30,000 or more.  The booth distributed printed information prepared by Dr. Barbara Brown, Extension Food Specialist, and utilized a power point and DVD.  Well over 1,000 people visited this specialized booth and signed up for a door prize ($200 value Deni Select Vac system and four rolls of multi-ply packaging film).  The booth was manned by Extension staff along with adult and teen volunteers.

The booth promoted several two-hour workshops this fall on Venison, From Field to Table planned by County FCS/4-H Educators Jean Bailey—Dewey County, Cathy James—Logan County, and Karen Armbruster—Woods County.  Their joint project is funded through a Northwest District Extension mini-grant.  Workshop dates/sites are:  October 6 -- Enid, October 13/El Reno, October 29 -- Alva & Guthrie, and November 13 -- Taloga.  To contact workshop leaders, visit http://countyext.okstate.edu/nwdistrict/   Click on “County Extension Office” then select any of these three counties for contact information.

Also at the above Web site, click on WILDLIFE EXPO HANDOUTS to secure copies of the Wild Game Food Safety materials (Freezing, Canning and Jerky), view a related power point and locate a source to purchase a DVD “FIELD DRESSING and PROCESSING DEER FOR HUNTERS” also used in the NW Extension Wild Game Food Safety Expo booth.

This was the second year for Northwest District Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service to sponsor a booth at the Wildlife Expo, but the first year for this topic.  Many thanks to staff and volunteers who assisted in this promotional/educational effort!
