Current Events

Ornamental Plant Materials Conference Slated: The 2007 OSU Ornamental Plant Materials Multi-State Conference will take place Oct. 9-10 at the Best Western, 600 E. McElroy, Stillwater. The conference chairman is Mike Schnelle, OSU Professor and Nursery/Ornamentals Extension Specialist. The early bird deadline for pre-registration is September 28. Space Still Available: There is still space available in the Water Quality, Phosphorus Management, Volunteer Water Monitoring, Waste Management, Stormwater, and Green Acres workshops, slated Oct.15 at the Southern Region Water Conference in Fayetteville. Registration for these half-day, workshops is free, but advanced registration is required. Workshop descriptions are available on the web at http://waterquality.okstate.edu/events/workshops.htm.  For more information on the workshops or the rest of the conference, call Mike Smolen at 405-744-8414.


Condolences to: Renee Daugherty, Leadership Development and Educational Methods Specialist, on the death of her father. Robert Eugene Daugherty passed away Sept. 9. Graveside services took place Sept. 10 at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, 205 4-H Building, Stillwater, OK  74078.

Condolences to: The family of Billy Parham, former Southeast District Extension Director. He passed away Sept. 10. Funeral services took place Sept. 15. He worked for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service for 38 years before his retirement in 1986. Cards may be sent to his wife, Betty Parham, 531 S. Highland, Ada, OK  74820. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home in Tahlequah, the 96th Infantry Division Memorial Fund, or the Boy Scouts of America.

Condolences to: Aarika Holt, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development, Nowata County, on the death of her father. Joe Biggerstaff passed away Sept. 17. Graveside services took place today, Sept. 21 at the Nowata Cemetery. Cards may be sent to Aarika and her family in care of Benjamin Funeral Home, 114 W. Cherokee, Nowata, OK  74048.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials in his honor may be sent to the Nowata City County Library, 224 South Pine St., Nowata, OK  74048 or 10033 Emergency Team, 321 East Cherokee, Nowata, OK  74048.

College Corner

CASNR Students Earn Top Three Spots: Three CASNR students took the top three spots at the 2007 Southern Weed Society Collegiate Weed Undergraduate Contest that took place recently in Vero Beach, Fla. Josh Bushong, a senior majoring in plant and soil sciences, captured first place. Amber Brewe, who is a junior plant and soil sciences student, placed second. Cody Massey, a senior majoring in animal science with a minor in rangeland management, took third place. This was the first year for the undergraduate competition to take place. The Southern Weed Society only sponsored a graduate-level competition in the past. The team’s advisor is Case Medlin, Extension Weed Science Specialist.

Crain Named One of the Top Twenty Freshman Men: Jared Crain, a plant and soil sciences student from Woodward, was named one of the Top Twenty Freshman Men. The selection of these students, who are now in their sophomore year at OSU, is based upon scholarship, community service, campus involvement, and outstanding leadership from their freshman year. Congratulations Jared!


Extension Educators Honored at NEAFCS: Two Extension Educators were named award winners at the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences meeting that took place Sept. 17-20 in St. Paul, Minn. Award winners were:

  • Arleen James, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development, Texas Count – 2007 Distinguished Service Award
  • LaDell Emmons, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development, Pittsburg County – 2nd place, Southern Region Winner, and 3rd place, National Winner, Radio category.

Hattey Honored: Jeff Hattey, Professor, Plant and Soil Science, was named a Regents Distinguished Teaching Award winner by the OSU A&M Board of Regents. He will be recognized during the fall convocation on Oct. 11.
