 Ag Technology Field Day Slated: The Oklahoma Ag Technology Field Day will take place Aug. 9 at the Grady County Fairgrounds and Events Center in Chickasha. Educational programs and demonstrations regarding precision agriculture technology will be scheduled throughout the day. The field day will feature the latest precision agriculture technologies and experts that have developed, evaluated, and used these technologies. Educational topics include Sensor Based Nitrogen Management, Strategies to Reduce Sprayer Drift, Economics of Sprayer Control Systems, Selecting a GPS Guidance System, and Using Technology for On-Farm Comparisons. Along with the educational programs, participants are encouraged to use the ‘ride and drive’ area to try out the latest GPS guidance systems. Blakley Set to Retire: A come-and-go retirement reception for Sandra Blakley, Senior Accounting Clerk, DASNR, will take place Aug. 9, 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m., in 106 Ag Hall. A short presentation is scheduled at 2:15 p.m. Blakely has worked for DASNR for 33 years. Cards, letters of congratulations and small gifts of appreciation are being accepted now through Aug. 3, and will be included in a gift basket. Healthy Families Program Changes Name: The Healthy Families grant program is now known as Parent Child Connections. The new name reflects what the programs are about and can encompass the many “connections” that do and need to take place between parents and their children, between parents and other members within a family, with other parents outside their family, with the program and staff, as well as the community-at-large. The program currently is in Jefferson, Cotton, Comanche, Stephens, Texas, Delaware and Canadian counties.

Tulsa County 4-H Completes Beautification Projects: Members of the Tulsa County 4-H program recently wrapped up their 2007 “Keep Oklahoma Beautiful” projects. As a group, here is what they accomplished:

  • Hosted 21 events
  • Involved 326 volunteers
  • 317 hours
  • 15 city and/or neighborhood communities
  • Cleaned up 92.45 tons of litter, debris and bulky waste
  • 1 playground/community recreation area cleaned
  • 100 pill bottles collected
  • 410 pounds of clothing collected
  • 515 pounds of newspapers collected for recycling
  • 110 cell phones collected for recycling
  • 445 flowers planted
  • 602 lockers cleaned
  • 2 educational workshops/community outreach presentations held (25 adults and 58 kids attended
  • 4 general awareness events held (24 in attendance)

Congratulations to: Delaina Goforth, Administrative Support Specialist, and her husband, Marty, on the birth of their daughter. Alexis Denae was born July 19, weighed 9 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 20 ¾ inches long. She is welcomed home by her brother, Caleb.

Condolences to: Randy True, Extension Assistant, Agricultural Economics, on the death of his father-in-law. Leroy Trzebiatowski passed away July 17. Funeral services took place July 21 at the Green Valley Free Methodist Church west of Carmen, Okla. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Condolences to: Jeremiah Butler, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, Delaware County, on the death of his father. Jerry Butler passed away July 20. Funeral services took place July 24 at the Roberts Funeral Home in Stilwell.

 Condolences to: Renee Daugherty, Leadership Development and Educational Methods Specialist, on the death of her mother. Thelma Daugherty passed away July 22. Graveside services took place today at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Memorials may be made to the Stillwater Public Education Foundation, 314 S. Lewis St., Stillwater, OK  74074.

 Condolences to: Bill Stacey, Northeast District Extension Director, on the death of his father. Alvie Stacey passed away July 25. Funeral services will take place Saturday, July 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Brumley and Mills Funeral Home Chapel, 1410 E. Carl Albert Pkwy., McAlester.


OAEAA Members Hold State Meeting: Members of the Oklahoma Association of Extension Agriculture Agents held their annual state meeting July 9-11 in Enid. The Recognition and Awards Banquet was the evening of July 10. The following is a list of awards and recognition presented to individuals during the evening.

  • Mark Gregory, Area Agronomy Specialist, Southwest District - 2007 Distinguished Service Award
  • Danny Cook, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, Roger Mills County - 2007 Achievement Award 
  • Jeremiah Butler, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, Delaware County - 2007 Outstanding Young Agent

Communication Awards:

  • Joshua Payne, Area Animal Waste Management Specialist, Direct Mail Piece, and Publication

OAEAA Members Recognized at National Meeting: Fourteen members of OAEAA attended the recent National Association of County Agriculture Agents meeting in Grand Rapids, Mich. Those attending include Greg Highfill, David Nowlin, Nathan Anderson, Stan Fimple, Phil Pratt, Bob Woods, Josh Payne, Danny Cook, Dirk Webb, JJ Jones, Mark Gregory, Ron Vick, Brian Jervis, and Mick Jones. Webb began serving on the NACAA Board as the Southern Region Director, and Pratt was elected NACAA Vice President. Oklahoma’s delegation hosted a hospitality room to support Pratt’s campaign. Highfill, outgoing OAEAA President presented the Oklahoma Flag in the Opening Ceremony on Sunday and also presented NACAA President Chuck Otte with the traditional cowboy hat from the OAEAA. Payne and Highfill both presented professional involvement seminars, and Jones conducted the Scholarship Auction. Highfill, Nowlin, and Anderson served as voting delegates. In addition, several OAEAA members received national awards, including:

  • Dan Cook, Extension Educator, Agriculture/4-H Youth Development, Roger Mills County -  NACAA Achievement Award


On the Run: Congratulations to Angie Smith, newly hired Nutrition Education Assistant with the Fresh Start-Nutrition and You program in Pushmataha County. She placed 3rd in her age division of the 5K run that took place in Valliant, Okla., on July 21.
