Vol. 7 – No. 13
June 29, 2007

Yesterday, June 28, Gary Sherrer sent notification via e-mail that the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education allocated the $2.9 million to OCES and OAES to complete the Second Century Initiative.  An important part of that implementation is that the funds were not only allocated for this year, but were also annualized.  Thus, the Extension Service and Experiment Station will receive these monies in our base funding for subsequent years.

I would like to thank each of you for all your dedication and hard work as you called on your local constituents time and again in asking for their support to carry the message to the legislators to impress upon them how important our programs are to the citizens of Oklahoma.  Thank you for the huge role you played as a part of our DASNR team!

Canola Production Conference Slated: The Canola Production Conference will be held on July 19 from 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Hoover Building in Enid. For additional information contact Deana Titus at 405-744-6420.

Schnelle Teaches Internationally: Mike Schnelle, Extension Ornamental Floriculture Specialist, returned recently from Atrek, Turkmenistan, where he taught a horticultural crop production short course June 4-16. His audience mainly consisted of female farmers who were interested in greenhouse crops. Farmers in that area, which is a subtropical desert, have a significant challenge with low rainfall and high summer temperatures.

Washita County 4-Hers go to San Diego: Washita County 4-H had a team represent Oklahoma at the 2007 Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI)User Conference in San Diego. The team consisted of Travis Boese, 4-H member; Caleb Glennie, 4-H member; Mary Peck, Extension Educator; and Dr. Jeff Sallee, State 4-H Specialist. Boese and Glennie will be serving as the Oklahoma representatives on the National 4-H Technology Team. They will be collaborating with youth across the nation providing input to the direction of the 4-H Technology Project.
