CURRENT EVENTS
Bixby Field Day to Showcase Research Efforts: June 29 is the date for the Bixby Vegetable Field Day. The field tour begins at 6:00 p.m. at the OSU Vegetable Research Station, 13711 S. Mingo Road near Bixby. The event will showcase to the public what OSU is doing in vegetable research and will feature a number of variety trials, including tomatoes and sweet corn. Other crops on the tour include green beans, southern peas, and a display planting of cucurbits, including specialty melons. 4-H Wheat Show Slated: The annual 4-H Jr. Wheat Show will take place July 19 at the Payne County Expo Center in Heritage Hall. Judging of wheat samples will begin at 9:00 a.m. For a copy of the rules and entry form see http://agecon.okstate.edu/profile/kim.anderson/4H_&_FFA_2006_Rules_Report.pdf.

Counties Receive Training: Five counties that were selected to be part of the Leadership and Community Development Impact Team recently went through a three-day training in Oklahoma City. The training was funded by part of the $25,000 USDA Engaging Youth, Serving Community grant written by Kevin Hackett, Northwest District 4-H Youth Development Program Specialist, and Karla Knoepfli, State 4-H Extension Volunteer and Leadership Specialist. The Leadership and Community Development Impact Team co-leaders are Jim Rexwinkle, Extension Educator, Creek County 4-H Youth Development; Jerret Sanders, 4-H member from Caddo County; and Alyssa Latty, 4-H member from Pittsburg County. The training included sessions on youth and adult partnerships, meeting facilitation, planning and developing forums, and action plan development. Counties involved include Bryan, Caddo, Creek, Pittsburg, and Pottawatomie.
Retirement Reception for Mitch Fram: A retirement reception honoring Mitch Fram, Northeast Area Water Quality Specialist, will take place June 5 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Northeast District Office in Muskogee. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Update Your Personnel Directory: The 2006 Personnel Directory was printed before Stephens County moved. The new address is 2002 South 13th St., Duncan, OK, 73533-9021. Please make this change to ensure all correspondence is mailed to the correct address.
OCES Staff Attend Conference: Four OCES staff members recently attended the Public Issues Leadership Development Conference in Arlington, Va. The conference is designed to keep Extension professional up-to-date on changing public issues that impact the community and affect Extension programming. OCES staff who attended were Brenda Sheik, Kyle Worthington, Greg Highfill, and Keith Boevers.
Congratulations to: Ron Dahlgren, Sr. TV Producer/Director, Agricultural Communications Services, and his wife, Jackie, on the birth of their granddaughter. Laura Grace Ullery was born June 2, weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 19 inches long. She is welcomed home by big sister Claire.
Congratulations to: Erica Tahbonemah, Extension Secretary, Kiowa County, and her husband, Ken, on the birth of their daughter. Emma Grace Tahbonemah was born June 9. She weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Emma is welcomed home by her two big sisters, Lauren and Aiyanna.
Condolences to: Virginia Stanley, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development, Muskogee County, on the death of her grandfather. Carlos Knight passed away June 10. Funeral services took place June 14 at the First Baptist Church in Fort Gibson.
