Vol. 4 – No. 2
January 30, 2004

Calendar Item: Extension Supporters Day at the Capitol is set for Tuesday, April 6, 2004. Please place this date on your calendar. We appreciate your past support and look forward to your participation in making this event a successful one again this year. Please begin now making contact with your Extension volunteers and 4-H’ers asking for their commitment to attend this important event with you on Tuesday, April 6. As soon as the State Advisory Council completes the planning process, we will forward more detailed information to you.

President Schmidly Hosting Town Meetings: As part of OSU’s strategic planning process, President Schmidly will be hosting a series of town meetings during the month of February.  The events include:

Tuesday, February 17               Tulsa                          6:30 – 8:00 p.m.                       (location TBA)

Monday, February 23               Oklahoma City            7:00 – 8:30 p.m.                       (location TBA)

Thursday, February 26 Stillwater                     6:30 – 8:00 p.m.                       (location TBA)

PLEASE NOTE:  The February 26 event will be simulcast to a number of locations across the state.  We have been asked to help publicize these locations and to help invite participants.  The expected locations are Altus, Ardmore, Bartlesville, Elk City, El Reno, Enid, Goodwell, Hugo, Lawton, McAlester, Miami, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Ponca City, and Woodward.

We will have additional information to you, hopefully early next week, concerning the details.  I would ask that you utilize newsletters, newspaper columns, radio interviews, etc. to help get the word out.  Also, the President has asked if you might send letters to key leaders.  We will provide a suggested draft letter for you to use.

Over the last week, several of you have helped set up some of these locations – thanks much for those efforts.  Your responsiveness has been much appreciated – we have had several very positive remarks.  This is a great opportunity to show that we are an important part of the OSU System and that through your efforts, we touch lives throughout Oklahoma.

OEAFCS Annual Meeting: The Oklahoma Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences will have its annual meeting April 14-16 in Oklahoma City. The FCS Impact Teams will meet April 14 at the Oklahoma County Extension Office. For more information contact Micah Treadwell at 580-335-2515.

Sharing the Warmth: The Washington County 4-H officer team collected more than 100 winter coats that were donated to Mary Martha Outreach in Bartlesville. The coats were disturbed to the less fortunate.

ESP Has New Officers: The 2004-2005 officers for the Oklahoma Omicron Nu chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi are Charles Cox, president; Keith Boevers, vice president; Dana Baldwin, secretary; Loveta Hammond, treasurer; Ted Evick, director, Southeast District; Lynda Latta, director, Northwest District; Brenda Miller, director, Northeast District; and Pam Varner, director, Southwest District.

Oklahoma State Fair: September 14 is the date for 4-H entries and judging at the Oklahoma State Fair. Counties need to note that this new date may conflict with their county fair dates. If a county needs to switch the fair to which they take their 4-H Exhibits, they should complete the form in the "State Fair Resource Notebook” and return it to Kevin Hackett by July 1, 2004. Exhibits may be picked up on September 27.

State Fair 4-H Classes Mailed: The 2004 State Fair 4-H Classes were mailed January 26. County Educators who did not receive this should contact Kevin Hackett, Northwest District 4-H Program Specialist, at 580-233-5295, or email at hacketk@okstate.edu. The information also is available on the 4-H Web site at http://agweb.okstate.edu/fourh/.

Manual Available: The “Small Gas Engines Volunteers Manual” is now available for people who use cut-away engines. For more information contact Harry Field at 405-744-8424.
