OQBN Impacts Health of Calves: In an effort to document the impact of the Oklahoma Quality Beef Network, Extension personnel collected data from producers during the fall and winter of 2003/2004 by tracking health and performance of 1,700 head of OQBN certified cattle that represented 45 different sale lots. Health data was recorded on the OQBN certified cattle and on similar non-certified calves purchased at the same time. Through the first 90 days after the sale, approximately 24 percent of non-certified cattle were treated for sickness; compared to just 4.5 percent of the OQBN certified cattle. Data also showed the death loss of non-certified cattle was around 3 percent, whereas OQBN certified cattle had a less than 1 percent death loss rate.
