August 27, 2004

Africanized Honey Bee Update: On August 26 you should have received via e-mail a message from Dr. Richard Grantham regarding Africanized Honey Bees. The diagnostic lab looked at two bees from Tillman County using PCR techniques and the DNA profiles match those of Africanized Honey Bees. That information was passed on, per protocol, to the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry, who sent the insects on to USDA-ARS for identification. Refer to Dr. Grantham’s message for information sources available through Texas A&M and the University of Arizona Web sites. If there is a positive identification, you will be hearing more from Dr. Grantham and the diagnostic lab.

Food Safety Mobile: The USDA Food Safety Mobile will be making a stop at the Oklahoma State Fair September 24-26. This exhibit is sponsored by OCES, Oklahoma Beef Council, and the Oklahoma Restaurant Association. The Food Safety Mobile is a 35-foot, recreational-style vehicle and promotes food safety, including the four “Fight BAC!” messages of the Partnership for Food Safety Education.  Volunteers are needed to help man the bus on those dates between 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. for 3.5 or 4 hour shifts.  To volunteer, please contact Barbara Brown at 405-744-6824.

OQBN Announces Sale Dates: The Oklahoma Quality Beef Network has announced its 2004 sale dates. For more information, please contact Dave Lalman at 405-744-6060.
