Plant and Soil Sciences Department Receives Grant: The Rangeland Ecology and Management Program in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences has a long history of cooperating with a variety of public and private partners in conserving natural resources with the ranching and farming community.  As a result, the program recently received notice of a grant for $250,000 to assist ranchers and other landowners in Northwest Oklahoma. The grant is a targeted initiative to restore more than 40,000 acres of habitat for High Plains species-at-risk such at the lesser prairie chicken, and other grassland species on private ranches. Technical assistance will include patch burning (fire and grazing management), mechanical removal of large cedars with OSU's ball and chain, and sponsored demonstration field days. Cooperators include the Oklahoma Wildlife and Prairie Heritage Alliance, Oklahoma Chapter of Quail Unlimited, the Comanche Pool Prairie Resource Foundation, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the High Plains Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. Tom Lucas, RC&D Coordinator from Buffalo, Okla., was instrumental in obtaining this grant.
