Listening Sessions Kick Off on September 16: With the facilitator training completed in August, the Oklahoma Community Listening Sessions will begin on September 16 in Washington County at the Washington County Fairgrounds. These sessions will continue through December. The goal of the Oklahoma Community Listening Sessions is to invite citizens to identify, discuss, and define their community’s needs and opportunities, and build on assets that already exist. The involvement of citizens in identifying needs and opportunities in their county and community will be extremely valuable as Extension beings its long-range strategic planning process. A Master Calendar that lists all of the Listening Sessions can be found at http://www.dasnr.okstate.edu/oces/ocls/ . The calendar will be updated as more information becomes available.

Governor Appoints Dean: Sam Curl, Dean and Director, Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, has been appointed by Governor Frank Keating to serve as a member of the Oklahoma Science and Technology Research and Development Board.

Counties Receive Contracts: The Oklahoma State Department of Health has awarded four fiscal year 2003 Child Abuse Prevention Fund contracts to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. The contracts total $442,337, and will be used to continue operation of the Healthy Families programs serving Canadian, Delaware, and Texas counties, and to develop a new program jointly serving Cotton and Jefferson counties. Contracts totaling $34,500 have also been awarded to implement Parents As Teachers programs in coordination with the Healthy Families programs in Delaware and Texas counties. The funds are State Department of Education grants to local school districts that, in turn, are subcontracting with OCES. Both the Healthy Families and the Parents As Teachers programs provide support and education to parents with infants and young children through home visitation and center-based services

New Addition to Sunup: Beginning next week, all Extension employees will be receiving via email a Sunup Advisory. The advisory will give a listing of topics for the next day’s show. In addition, a new “community calendar” will become a regular feature of the show. Rob McClendon, host of Sunup, would like county staff to call him about upcoming events in their communities. For more information about the community calendar, contact McClendon at 405-744-7049.

PARS Monthly Activity Reporting Update: Regarding the PARS monthly activity report, please note that certain fields must have a value that is displayed before the records will be accepted. These are called “Required Fields.” If the field does not contain data, the user will receive a message indicating the data contains errors and the data is not saved (“submitted”). Those “Required Fields” are month, key code, audience 1, seqstep, hrs plnd, and hrs actual. Please make sure you include data in those fields. The URL for PARS FY03 is http://intranet.okstate.edu/par/fy03/ . Some of you have been trying to input FY03 data by going through the old FY02 site. This URL, and the URL for the FY02 PARS can be found on the Staff Development website at http://intranet.okstate.edu/ . Click on “Staff Development,” or go to http://intranet.okstate.edu/staff_development/.

The narrative box was not big enough for some narratives. We have upgraded the production server to accommodate for coding changes required to hold larger narrative statements. In the future we expect to make coding changes to complete the solution to this problem.

Static headings (fixed as you move down the page) are still to come. We have known of this need for some time. We believe we have a programming fix, but we have been waiting to get the appropriate person on the job. As you know, we share most of the on-campus DASNR technical support staff and we have had to wait our turn. This should be available in a couple of weeks.

Congratulations to: Rodney King, Extension Educator, Agriculture and CED, Muskogee County, and his wife Amy, on the birth of their son, Jasper Alan. He was born September 4 and weighted 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Jasper is welcomed home by big sister Kallee.
