Lane Ag Center Field Day: The Field
Day is slated for Saturday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Special recognition will be awarded to Congressman Wes Watkins.
The recognition is for Watkins' untiring efforts towards
development of Southeastern Oklahoma during his years in public
office. The Field Day will include guided tours of research
plots. Concessions will be available with all proceeds going to
the Atoka FFA Chapter. The Field Day is open to the public. For

Cotton Scouting Workshops: Two
workshops are scheduled to help agriculturists learn how to scout
fields for cotton insects. The focus will be on how to plant map,
a method on which base production decisions are made. The first
workshop is scheduled for June 24 at the Southwest Research and
Extension Center at Altus. The second workshop will take place on
July 9 at the Civic Center at Medford. Both workshops will begin
at 8:30 and lunch will be provided. Continuing Education Units
(CEUs) will be given for those who qualify. For more information,

State Meeting: The OAEAA Annual
Meeting/Professional Improvement Conference will take place July
10-12 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Oklahoma City. Registration
is due by July 1. Hotel reservations are due by June 20 to
receive the conference rate. Conference information was recently
mailed to members. For additional information on the conference

Beef Conference: The 34th Annual Beef
Improvement Federation Conference is scheduled for July 10-13 in
Omaha, NE. This years theme is Focus on

Announcements
Senate
and House Pass Resolutions: During the recently
completed legislative session, the Senate and House of
Representatives passed a resolution authored by Senator Mueggee
and Representative Covey, chairs of the Senate and House
Agriculture Committees, commending the Oklahoma Cooperative
Extension Service for its efforts to improve communities and for
undertaking our Initiative for the Future of Rural
Oklahoma. Extension was encouraged to continue to
help each community realize its fullest potential in the
21st Century. The full text of the resolution can be seen

IFRO Web Site: A web site has been
created to share information concerning the Initiative for
the Future of Rural Oklahoma and to assist those groups and
communities who are preparing proposals. The information under
the Resource link and the FAQ link should be especially helpful.

New Grant: Congratulations to the
Jackson County Extension staff. They have just received a $500
Earth Day grant from Wal-Mart to be used by their 4-H Clubs for
horticulture projects.
New Address: The Greer County Extension
Office is on the move. The new mailing address is Greer County
Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, 2302A North Louis Tittle,
Mangum, Oklahoma 73554. All phone numbers and emails remain the
same. The office is now housed in the Greer County Conservation
District Complex.
In-Service Training is Important:
Participation in in-service training opportunities is a very
important part of professional development for all county
Extension educators. Please remember when you enroll in an
in-service training, you are expected to attend. Listed below are
the in-service training sessions that have been canceled
effective 6-10-02. Please review your enrollment list to see if
you had pre-enrolled in any of these canceled sessions. If so,
please select other sessions and modify your enrollment. Note
that some of the canceled sessions are being offered at other
locations. The enrollment process should be completed by Monday,
June 24. Your cooperation in the new in-service enrollment
process is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please
call Joyce Martin at 405-744-7969.

Awards of Excellence: The Southwest
District has honored two support staff members. Nominations were
taken from co-workers of the support staff. The Sr. Award of
Excellence, given to a staff member with more than five years of
service, was presented to Angie Hines, Oklahoma County Senior
Secretary. She has been on board since August 1985. The Jr. Award
of Excellence, given to a staff member with one to five years of
service, was presented to Micki Smith, Beckham County Senior
Secretary. She has been with OCES since May 2001.
UkpakaTakes On New Role in 2003:
Effective June 1, 2003, Carolynn Ukpaka, Area Coordinator for
Comanche Unit Community Nutrition Education Program, and a
Registered Dietitian, has been appointed as Chair of the 2003
National Nutrition Month Campaign for the Oklahoma Dietetic
Association.
International Speaker: Mike Schnelle,
Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service Ornamental Floriculture
Specialist, was an invited speaker to Tokyo, Japan to address
Unites States Plant Material Possibilities for Japan. Schnelle's
hosts were the Japanese Agricultural Trade Organization and the
Japanese Nurserymen's Association. He was in Japan June 5-11.
Software Licensing: Oklahoma State
University and Microsoft have signed an agreement that allows OSU
employees to install certain software on their work and home
computers. Under the Microsoft Campus Agreement (MCA), staff,
faculty, and employees of OSU may, at no cost, install the
software covered under the MCA on their office and home
computers. Software covered under the MCA includes Microsoft
Office 2000 and Microsoft Office XP. Under the terms of the
agreement, all other MCA software installed on home
(non-University) computers must be removed. For more information,
contact your designated Extension Training and Technology Support
Specialist.
Congratulations to: Susan Moffat,
Cleveland County Extension Educator, FCS, and her husband Jerry,
on the birth of their son Conrad Moffat. He was born June 5th,
weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 20 inches long.
Condolences to: Arletta Webster, Senior
Financial Coordinator, on the death of her daughter, Jennifer
Webster, Ponca City. She passed away June 4. Funeral services
were held June 8 at the First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater.
