Current Events

State Conversation on Youth Development: A report form was recently sent as an e-mail attachment to all field staff. If you have not seen that message you can download the report form by visiting the 4-H web site at www.clover.okstate.edu/fourh. The list of delegates should be submitted as soon as possible after the County Conversations. The online report form is also active on the National 4-H Council page. Very few Oklahoma counties have reported their results to this date. The detailed instructions were in the last issue of Focus on Youth.

IMP Grant Program Requests Proposals: The OSU IPM Program provides funding each year for projects that will result in increased use of IPM methods in the state of Oklahoma. Proposals may be submitted by county, area, and campus staff employed by OCES, and scientists from OAES. A total of $48,500 is available this year. For more information, visit http://ipm.okstate.edu/ipm/minigrants.html or contact Pat Bolin (bolinp@okstate.edu, 405-744-9420).

Educational Watermelon Meeting: Anyone interested in watermelon production, pest management and marketing should consider attending the 4th Annual Statewide Watermelon Meeting on December 11. The meeting will be held at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha. To request a brochure with program topics and meeting details, contact your local County Extension office, or the Wes Watkins Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Lane. Email requests can be made to meeting@lane-ag.org

Award Winner: The American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) awarded a Blue Ribbon in its 2001 Educational Aids Competition to the team of Marley Beem, Billie Chambers, Mitch Fram, Wayne Kiner, Bill Ross, and Mike Smolen for their work with the "Trailer-Mounted Model to Educate About Natural Resources." The award was received in the category "Extension Methods."

Video Wins Award: The video "Conservation Tillage Spotlights" has been recognized as an award winner by the American Society of Agronomy. Each year the A-4 Extension Education Division sponsors a society-wide program to recognize Excellence in Educational materials in a variety of formats, including publications, audio-visuals, computer programs, newsletters, and web sites. "Conservation Tillage Spotlights" received the Award of Excellence in the audio-visuals category. Jim Stiegler, Plant and Soil Sciences, and Kathy Conry, Jon Dickey, Michel Haigh, and Craig Woods, Agricultural Communications Services, were key players in the development of this video and the printed materials. The video focuses on five Oklahoma producers and the different tillage systems they use. In the video they share their experiences and information with people who are interested in switching from conventional tillage to some form of conservation tillage.
