Recycling and Composting In-Service Slated March 31: Recycling & Composting Education for Youths is an in-service slated March 31in Oklahoma City. It will feature presentations on illegal dumping and hazardous waste, solid waste management resource trunks, waste-free lunches, textile reuse and recycling, and composting with worms. Presenters include Michael Freeman, Department of Environmental Quality, Senior Crimes Investigator; Chris Daniels, Goodwill Industries; Doug Hamilton, OSU Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Waste Management; and Ilda Hershey, OSU Agricultural Economics, Solid Waste Management Programs. For more information, please visit http://dasnr10.dasnr.okstate.edu:9090/Inservice/home.action.

OBQ Summit Slated to Take Place in April: The next Oklahoma Beef Quality Summit classes are scheduled for Monday - Wednesday, April 5-7, and Wednesday - Friday, April 7-9, at the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater.  (The program begins at 4 p.m. on the first day and concludes at 1 p.m. the last day.)  Using the National Beef Quality Audit as the foundation, the Beef Quality Summit course offers participants the opportunity to see the causes and results of quality challenges facing the beef industry. Summit attendees from ranchers to processors evaluate live cattle in an effort to predict quality and yield then follow the cattle through the harvest and grading process. Participants will actually fabricate a beef carcass into wholesale meat cuts. If you haven’t been to this outstanding educational event hosted by the Oklahoma Beef Council, Oklahoma State University, and the Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center, now is the time to do so.  It is free to participants with a $250 refundable deposit. For more information, please call 1-800-235-5403. Retirement Reception set for Cothren: Phillis Cothren, Garvin County Extension Educator, will be honored with a retirement reception April 6, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Santa Fe Depot in Pauls Valley. She began her Extension career in September 1984.


Looking for presenters for the upcoming State 4-H Roundup: The State 4-H Office and Roundup workshop committee are searching for individuals to volunteer to present educational workshops at the upcoming 89th State 4-H Roundup set for July 28-30 on the OSU campus in Stillwater. The workshops, geared for club members ages 13-19, need to be hands-on, motivational, upbeat, and age appropriate. Topics could include everything from engineering, technology, careers, fabrics and fashions, cooking, crafts, and performing arts to livestock, wildlife, entomology, public speaking, internet, etc. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Tracy Beck by phone at 405-744-8891 or e-mail at tracy.beck@okstate.edu.

Retired Extension Educator Hospitalized: Myra Whitehead, who retired from Extension in 1981, fell March 1 and broke her right hip. She will be at St. John Hospital in Sapulpa indefinitely. Cards may be sent to her at St. John Hospital, 1004 E. Bryan, Sapulpa, OK  74067. She began her Extension career in June 1949 in Ottawa County as a Home Demonstration Agent. She also worked in Lincoln and Tulsa counties before taking on the role of District Leader and District Home Economist in the Northeast District. She retired March 31, 1981.


Awards Presented at OAFCS State Meeting: Members of the Oklahoma Assocation of Family and Consumer Sciences met recently in Stillwater for the group’s state meeting. Two members were recognized for their achievements.

  • Phillis Cothren – Lynda Harriman Outstanding Extension Leader Award
  • Gina G. Peek – Outstanding Scholarly Paper for 2010

 Murray County Administrative Assistant Receives Special Honor: Beverly Runyan was recently recognized by the Murray County Junior Livestock Board as they selected her for the annual stock show dedication honor. A special ceremony took place March 5 where she was presented with an inscribed clock. In addition, her photograph will be permanently displayed in the Murray County Expo Center. Beverly has served the Murray County Extension office for 22 years. Congratulations Beverly!
